- Where to Go After Skull Rock
As starting areas go, Skull Rock is fairly forgiving. Its larger islands and sheltered coves give you room to establish your settlement, while the surrounding Tier 1 events provide plenty of opportunities to collect resources before attempting anything particularly dangerous.
More importantly, Skull Rock contains the opening quest for all four Pirate Principles:
- Notoriety: Phoenix on the Run
- Empire: A Noose for Enrique
- Seafaring: Charting with Charlie
- Wealth: Raven in the Jungle
That makes Skull Rock much more than a tutorial region. What you do here establishes your early captains, resources, Compass progression, and routes into the surrounding Seven Seas.
This guide covers every important Skull Rock event, where to explore next, the rewards worth prioritizing, and all four Principle story quests.
Skull Rock Map and Important Locations
Using Skull Rock itself as the center of the region, here’s what you’ll find in each direction.
| Direction | Location/Event |
|---|---|
| North | Drifting Castaways |
| North | Tier 1 Treasure Cave |
| North | Raven in the Jungle |
| Northwest | Ancient Archipelago entrance |
| West | Tier 1 Merchant Ship |
| West | Tier 1 Crown Port |
| West | A Noose for Enrique |
| Southwest | Whalesong Wake entrance |
| South | Phoenix on the Run |
| South | Tier 1 Smuggling Run |
| Southeast | Shipwreck |
| East | Jetsam |
| East | Charting with Charlie |
| East-Northeast | Buccaneer’s End / Bloody Bastille |
| Far South | Crossbone Keys |
There are also three possible starting locations on Skull Rock in Uncharted Mode.
The central starting position is the same location used when beginning Story Mode.
One of the nice things about Skull Rock is that you’re surrounded by events covering the game’s major ship specialties. You can experiment with Destroyer, Hunter, Prowler, and Reaver-style objectives without travelling deep into dangerous waters.
Skull Rock Event Rewards Can Vary
There’s one important thing to know before planning an exact farming route:
Some event locations and rewards can differ between games.
Certain fixed events, including the nearby Jetsam, always provide the same reward choices. Others draw their rewards from a small randomized pool.
For example, one Crown raid might reward Stone Blocks while another playthrough could offer Planks.
So don’t worry if your map doesn’t perfectly match another player’s run.
Drifting Castaways
The Drifting Castaways event north of Skull Rock is one of the easiest early opportunities because there’s no combat involved.
Simply sail over and choose what you want.
The rewards are fixed:
| Choice | Result |
|---|---|
| Maximum recruits | +30 Drifters, -15 Cohesion |
| Smaller recruitment | +10 Drifters |
| Improve Cohesion | -25 Coins, +10 Cohesion |
None of these choices create lasting story consequences.
Which Drifting Castaways Reward Should You Choose?
I’d usually take the 30 Drifters.
Yes, losing 15 Cohesion looks unpleasant this early, but the additional workforce can help you expand much faster.
More importantly, Skull Rock’s Principle story quests provide opportunities to restore Cohesion. That makes it practical to take the large group of Drifters, build toward your Tier 2 ship, and recover your Cohesion afterward.
If your settlement is already suffering from dangerously low Cohesion, though, don’t blindly take the penalty.
Jetsam
You’ll find Jetsam east of Skull Rock.
This is another non-combat event, making it an excellent early stop when your starting ship isn’t ready for serious engagements.
The rewards aren’t randomized.
You can obtain:
| Reward Choice | Resources |
|---|---|
| Planks | +150 Planks |
| Booze | +100 Booze |
| Black Powder | +95 Black Powder |
| Mixed haul | +70 Planks, +40 Booze, +45 Black Powder |
The mixed option is essentially the “Grab as Much as You Can” choice.
Best Jetsam Reward
I’d strongly consider taking the 95 Black Powder.
Planks are easy enough to replace. Two Sawmills connected to your Woodcutter can provide plenty.
Booze isn’t particularly troublesome either; build another Moonshine Still if production falls behind.
Black Powder is another story.
Producing it requires a more complicated chain involving:
Guano Gatherer → Woodcutter/Charcoal production → Charburner → Powdermill
Getting 95 Black Powder immediately skips quite a bit of work.
You can then use it to supply defensive towers or trade it for Supplies at friendly ports.
Shipwreck
The Shipwreck sits southeast of Skull Rock and offers considerably better resources—but this time there’s a price.
You exchange Crew for Salt and Coins.
| Choice | Reward |
|---|---|
| Large haul | +500 Salt, +300 Coins, -10 Crew |
| Small haul | +150 Salt, +50 Coins, -3 Crew |
Losing ten Crew means you’ll have to replace those sailors with ten Drifters once your vessel returns to port.
That’s not insignificant early on.
However, 300 Coins can be extremely valuable.
It can help fund important Principle buildings such as the Salvage Yard, Crow’s Nest, or Shrine of the Sea.
Salt also has important uses, including Leatherworking and producing Cassava Bread, which you’ll eventually need for Scallywag upkeep.
If you have enough Drifters waiting at home, taking the larger reward can therefore be worth the casualties.
Skull Rock Tier 1 Events
The surrounding waters contain four particularly useful Tier 1 events.
Each effectively introduces one of Corsair Cove’s major ship specialties:
| Event | Preferred Specialty |
|---|---|
| Crown Port | Destroyer |
| Merchant Ship | Hunter |
| Smuggling Run | Prowler |
| Treasure Cave | Reaver |
You don’t actually need the specialized Tier 2 ships yet.
The starting Landlubber can complete these events, particularly when paired with the correct captain.
Tier 1 Crown Port Raid
The Crown Port lies west of Skull Rock.
Recommended Stats
Preferred ship: Tier 1 Destroyer
Gun Damage: 3
Armor: 2
Your Landlubber can handle the encounter, but Teach is a particularly useful captain because of the additional Gun Damage.
Crown Port Enemy Stats
| Stat | Value |
|---|---|
| Health | 17 |
| Crew | 18 |
| Gun Damage | 3 |
| Boarding Damage | 2 |
| Speed | 2 |
| Manoeuvrability | 2 |
| Armor | 5 |
Objective
Shoot – Reduce enemy Health to 0.
This is probably the most straightforward of Skull Rock’s combat events.
Your goal is simply to destroy the enemy vessel.
Teach’s Easy as Murder can improve your dice performance, while Heavy Fire is especially useful because you can damage the opponent’s Health while simultaneously protecting your own.
There’s little reason to overcomplicate this fight: concentrate on Health damage and end the engagement before attrition becomes expensive.
Tier 1 Merchant Ship
A Merchant Ship can be found west of Skull Rock.
Recommended Setup
Preferred specialty: Tier 1 Hunter
Gun Damage: 2
Speed: 2
A Landlubber still works.
For captains, Kanja or Honorata can improve the relevant stats.
Merchant Ship Stats
| Stat | Value |
|---|---|
| Health | 11 |
| Crew | 14 |
| All combat stats | 1 |
This event takes place in two stages.
Objective 1: Chase
You need to close 600m of distance.
Speed is therefore much more important during the opening stage than simply trying to inflict damage.
Objective 2: Threaten
Reduce the Merchant Ship’s Health and Crew below 75%.
Once you’ve caught your target, switch your focus to wearing down both values.
Try to protect your Crew whenever possible.
Taking some ship Health damage isn’t nearly as concerning because you can repair the vessel at your Pier with Planks. Replacing lost pirates can become more troublesome.
Hookshots are particularly useful because reducing the enemy’s stats also weakens their subsequent dice rolls.
Tier 1 Smuggling Run
The Tier 1 Smuggling Run is south of Skull Rock.
Recommended Setup
Preferred specialty: Tier 1 Prowler
Speed: 2
Manoeuvrability: 3
The Landlubber can once again get the job done.
Honorata is an excellent captain choice because she can boost both relevant stats.
Opponent
The opposing vessel has:
16 Health, 16 Crew, and 2 in all relevant stats.
There are three objectives.
Objective 1: Barter
Gain 108 Advantage.
This is arguably the hardest section because Bartering depends heavily on dice rolls rather than simply overpowering the objective with a particular ship stat.
That means it can burn through a substantial amount of Supplies.
Use Haggling to prevent Advantage losses while gaining additional dice. Once you’ve established an advantage, capitalize with One-Sided Deal or Cheeky Offer.
Objective 2: Navigate
Close 400m of distance.
Objective 3: Sneak
Cover the final 5m.
Navigate and Sneak should be considerably easier than Barter if you brought a ship and captain suited to Speed and Manoeuvrability.
Keep an eye on Supplies during the first stage so you don’t win the Barter only to leave yourself without enough options for the remaining objectives.
Tier 1 Treasure Cave
The Treasure Cave is north of Skull Rock.
Recommended Setup
Preferred specialty: Tier 1 Reaver
Boarding Damage: 3
You can use your Landlubber and assign Scarlet as captain to improve Boarding Damage.
Opponent
The opponent has:
16 Health, 16 Crew, and 2 in all stats.
The Treasure Cave has three stages.
Objective 1: Charts
Gain 10 Charts.
Objective 2: Demoralize
Reduce enemy Crew below 50%.
Objective 3: Investigate
Gain 10 Clues.
The main difficulty here is Crew attrition.
Several actions can threaten your pirates, and the Demoralize stage is particularly dangerous because you might not have an action capable of both protecting your own Crew and inflicting enough Crew damage on the enemy.
Sometimes accepting a small loss is actually the better play.
If one aggressive action can finish the objective immediately, losing a few Crew in that turn can be preferable to spending another two or three rounds slowly taking casualties.
Skull Rock Story Quests
Skull Rock contains the first story quest for every Pirate Principle.
These quests are important for more than Compass progression. They introduce recruitable characters, reward Cohesion, and open storylines in neighboring regions.
In Story Mode, you’ll also begin Amara’s storyline here through the tutorial.
The four major Principle quests are intended for Tier 2-level ships.
Phoenix on the Run – Notoriety Quest
Timothy “the Phoenix” needs help, but his problems eventually put you on a collision course with the undead legend Rupert “The Reaper” Killigrew.
Recommended Setup
Ship: Moonlight Prowler or Azimuth+
Manoeuvrability: 24
Armor: 4
Recommended Captain: Honorata
You’ll need to complete:
- Sneak – 47m
- Gather – 20 Charts
- Outrun – 3,800m
Rewards
Timothy
+20 Cohesion
Completing the quest unlocks:
Feasting with Legends – Crossbone Keys
The high Manoeuvrability requirement is exactly why the Moonlight Prowler fits this mission so well.
A Noose for Enrique – Empire Quest
The Crown has captured some of Enrique’s friends and plans to publicly execute them.
Helping Enrique can also improve your relationship with the Tribes Alliance, locals actively resisting Crown rule.
Recommended Setup
Ship: Iron Fist or Steel Edge+
Gun Damage: 20
Manoeuvrability: 4
Armor: 20
Recommended Captain: Teach
Objectives:
- Reduce enemy Health to 0
- Traverse 3,600m
- Defend for 3 turns
Rewards
Enrique
+20 Cohesion
Completing it unlocks:
Breaking the Bastille – Buccaneer’s End
This is naturally suited to the Empire approach. High Gun Damage helps end the offensive portion quickly, while strong Armor becomes valuable when you’re required to survive.
Charting with Charlie – Seafaring Quest
Charlie Lagrande is looking for an adventure on the Seven Seas.
Helping her also puts you on the path toward encountering the Daredevil’s League, a group of highly skilled seafarers.
Recommended Setup
Ship: Tide Runner or Huracan+
Speed: 9
Manoeuvrability: 4
Recommended Captain: Honorata or Kanja
Objectives:
- Gather 20 Charts
- Travel 3,600m
- Outrun – 3,800m
Rewards
Charlie
+20 Cohesion
Completing the quest unlocks:
Sailing the Line – Whalesong Wake
Speed is the obvious priority here, making Hunter-class ships an excellent fit.
Raven in the Jungle – Wealth Quest
Somewhere in the archipelago is a legendary city of gold, and Raven wants your help finding it.
Whether Raven eventually remains an ally is another matter, but helping him provides an introduction to the Golden Chain.
Recommended Setup
Ship: Sharktooth or Goldseeker+
Speed: 4
Armor: 10
Captain: Any suitable captain
The objectives are:
- Navigate 3,000m
- Perform
- Gather 20 Hints
The Perform stage is unusual.
Your opponent starts with 10 in all stats. You can spend Supplies to gradually reduce all of those stats or concentrate more heavily on lowering Speed.
Rewards
Raven
+20 Cohesion
Completing the quest unlocks:
Raiding with Raven – Ancient Archipelago
There’s also some flexibility with the ship recommendation.
A Tier 2+ Destroyer such as the Steel Edge can complete Raven in the Jungle as well. The navigation section may be more difficult, but you aren’t forced to build a Reaver solely to finish the quest.
Best Skull Rock Events to Complete First
You have quite a lot competing for your attention at the beginning, so there’s no need to immediately fight everything around Skull Rock.
A comfortable early route would be:
Drifting Castaways → Jetsam → Shipwreck → Tier 1 events → Tier 2 ship → Principle story quests.
Drifting Castaways can give you the workforce needed for expansion.
Jetsam then provides completely safe resources. Black Powder is particularly attractive because it’s considerably more complicated to manufacture than basic Planks or Booze.
The Shipwreck can provide another large early injection of Salt and Coins if you can afford to replace the lost Crew.
After that, start tackling the nearby Tier 1 events with captains that compensate for your Landlubber’s weaknesses.
The four events also give you a nice preview of the four specialized fleet roles before you commit resources to more expensive ships:
Crown Port → Destroyer gameplay
Merchant Ship → Hunter gameplay
Smuggling Run → Prowler gameplay
Treasure Cave → Reaver gameplay
Once your economy can support a Tier 2 vessel, you can begin tackling Skull Rock’s story quests much more comfortably.
Where to Go After Skull Rock
Skull Rock connects directly into several important regions:
Northwest → Ancient Archipelago
Southwest → Whalesong Wake
East-Northeast → Buccaneer’s End
Far South → Crossbone Keys
Your Principle quests naturally push you toward these areas.
Raven in the Jungle continues into the Ancient Archipelago with Raiding with Raven.
Charting with Charlie sends you toward Whalesong Wake for Sailing the Line.
A Noose for Enrique opens Breaking the Bastille in Buccaneer’s End.
And Phoenix on the Run leads toward Feasting with Legends in the Crossbone Keys.
So rather than trying to completely clear Skull Rock before leaving, use the region for what it’s designed to do: establish your settlement, gather easy resources, learn the four naval event styles, recruit your first important characters, and then follow whichever Principle storyline interests you into the wider Seven Seas.
