Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly invites players to uncover the lingering mysteries behind its characters, and Ryozo Munakata's Side Story is a perfect example. This narrative dives deep into his motivations and mental state, revealing why he was desperate to get Yae out of the Lost Village. It’s a lengthy and layered detour, demanding careful exploration and backtracking, yet it significantly enriches the main story’s emotional landscape.
Ryozo Munakata Side Story Walkthrough
Right after escaping the Kusabi in Chapter 4, backtrack immediately to the Kurosasa House courtyard. There, you’ll witness ghostly visions of Yae, Sae, and Ryozo Munakata. Capturing a photo of these specters will reward you with Green Journal 1, marking the beginning of Ryozo’s story. This moment establishes the tone for the side story, tying his lingering regrets into the village’s haunted atmosphere.
Your next destination is just behind the Kureha Shrine. Here, Ryozo’s ghost appears once again, alongside another journal. This segment adds meaningful context to his psyche and motivations. Note that after this, progress on the side story pauses until you reach Chapter 8, so don’t fret if you can’t proceed immediately.
In Chapter 8, as you accompany Mayu into the Old Tree, she will faint. When this happens, try exiting the tree through the entrance you used. This will trigger the appearance of Ryozo’s remnant spirit, who stands watch over Mayu. Photograph him using the Exposure Lens to acquire another journal he drops. The game will prompt you to check the Storehouse next, but hold off until the final chapter—leaving the Old Tree now results in a game over.
During the final chapter, after you and Mayu part ways, head to the Storehouse where Itsuki was confined throughout the game. This familiar location is crucial for wrapping up Ryozo’s side story. Take a photo of his specter here to unlock a new journal, shedding more light on his thought process during these dire events.
The last encounter with Ryozo’s ghost awaits at Misoni Hill, near the town’s entrance. Snap a final photograph to claim his last journal and a crystal. This crystal lets you listen to Ryozo’s closing reflections before leaving the Lost Village, providing a poignant conclusion to his haunted journey.
