The announcement of a God of War trilogy remake stirred mixed emotions among fans eager for a fresh take on Kratos’ legendary Greek saga. At the same time, Sony surprised everyone by releasing a pixel-art prequel, Sons of Sparta, that feels like an odd palate cleanser amid all the hype, costing $29.99 without much fanfare or explanation.

The remake will revisit the beloved originals from 2005 through 2010, bringing God of War, God of War II, and God of War III back to life with updated visuals while promising to preserve the core of Kratos’ epic, rage-fueled quest through Greek mythology. Adding to the intrigue, TC Carson, the first actor to voice Kratos before the 2018 reboot, makes a return for this project, signaling a nod to longtime fans and a bit of closure to his absence.

Expect patience to be your best friend here: Sony Santa Monica explicitly stated the project is in very early development. Translation: we likely won’t see playable footage or substantial updates for several years, with speculation pointing to a 2027 or later release window. Realistically, given Sony’s history with big titles, 2030 is a safer bet for when this remake might actually reach your console.

No gameplay trailers or platform announcements accompanied the reveal. The remake’s camera and combat style remain a mystery—is it the classic fixed-angle hack-and-slash or adopting the over-the-shoulder perspective introduced in the 2018 titles? For now, all fans got was TC Carson on screen confirming the remake’s existence and a promise that when more news comes, it’ll be “big.” Until then, expect to keep speculation and excitement in check.

In the meantime, Sony released God of War: Sons of Sparta, a 16-bit style retro platformer acting as a prequel to the main series. Despite feeling like a distraction from what fans truly want, this pixelated adventure lets you control a younger Kratos and his brother Deimos and carries a $29.99 price tag, with a deluxe edition available for $39.99.

Sons of Sparta’s Teen rating means it strips away the signature bloodshed and brutal combat that made God of War famous, presenting a toned-down, almost wholesome version of Kratos’ early days. This approach might be a shock to those craving the franchise’s usual intensity, reinforcing that this prequel caters to a different kind of player or simply fills the gap while the trilogy remake is under wraps.

With the God of War franchise approaching its 21st anniversary in March 2026, this announcement acts as both a nostalgic celebration and a strategic pivot. After years exploring Norse mythology, Sony seems ready to circle back to the roots of Kratos’ story in Greek mythology, potentially to revive interest and keep the series relevant for the next decade.

The facts are clear: a God of War trilogy remake is underway, TC Carson returns as Kratos, and the release is several years down the road. Until then, Sony hopes fans will embrace the unexpected pixel prequel, Sons of Sparta, as a tempting stopgap. The hype for God of War remains strong, but real updates will be slow to arrive, so mark your calendars for possibly 2028 to see this long-awaited remake come to fruition.
