Rubber is one of the most important early-game crafting materials in Subnautica 2 because several basic survival upgrades depend on it. Things like improved mobility, oxygen management, and crafting progression all start requiring Rubber fairly quickly.

The good news is that Rubber is actually very easy to obtain once you know where to look.
Instead of mining it directly, players first need to collect a plant resource called Lucifer Rotsac and process it using a Fabricator.
If you are struggling to craft items like Fins or upgraded air tanks, this is probably the resource you are missing.
Here is everything you need to know about finding Lucifer Rotsac and turning it into Rubber efficiently.
How to Get Rubber and Lucifer Rotsac in Subnautica 2
Lucifer Rotsac is a glowing plant resource found throughout the shallow starting biome.
Visually, it looks like:
- A glowing red orb
- Bulb or egg-shaped growth
- Attached to a larger alien flower
The plant it grows on is called the Cradle Shootroot.
Together, the two are some of the easiest flora to identify in the early game because they glow brightly underwater, especially at night.
Honestly, nighttime exploration actually makes finding these much easier.
Lucifer Rotsac Location
| Detail | Information |
|---|---|
| Distance from Lifepod | ~70m |
| Direction | East |
| Depth | ~15m |
| Harvest Method | Hand collection |
Lucifer Rotsac appears throughout the shallow waters surrounding the Lifepod.
The easiest way to locate it is by swimming East from the Lifepod and looking toward the seafloor around 15 meters deep.
You should eventually spot clusters of glowing alien flowers with red bulbs attached to the center.
These are Cradle Shootroots.
How to Identify Cradle Shootroot
The Cradle Shootroot itself has a very recognizable appearance.
It features:
- Thin sea-green leaves
- Orange-tipped edges
- A large starfish-like center
- A glowing red Lucifer Rotsac bulb
Both the flower and the bulb emit visible light, making them stand out clearly against the darker ocean floor.
At night, they are honestly difficult to miss because of how brightly they glow.
How to Harvest Lucifer Rotsac
Harvesting Lucifer Rotsac is extremely simple.
You do not need tools.
Just swim close to the glowing red bulb and interact with it directly.
Each bulb gives:
- 1 Lucifer Rotsac
The harvested item is automatically placed into your inventory.
Because these plants regrow fairly quickly, they are one of the more renewable early-game resources.
Cradle Shootroot Also Has Another Use
The flower itself can also be harvested separately.
Using the Survival Multitool, you can cut the Cradle Shootroot to collect:
- Fibrous Pulp
Fibrous Pulp can later be processed into:
- Fiber
- Oily Salad
So the plant actually provides multiple useful crafting resources from a single location.
Important Digestion Adaptation Requirement
One thing the game does not explain very clearly is that some food items require the Digestion Adaptation before you can consume them.
For example, Oily Salad crafted from Fibrous Pulp cannot properly be eaten until you unlock the Digestion Adaptation from the Angel Root near the Lifepod.
So if you cannot consume certain crafted foods yet, that is usually the reason.
How to Craft Rubber
Once you collect enough Lucifer Rotsac, return to a Fabricator.
Under the Basic Materials section, you can process the bulbs directly into Rubber.
Rubber Recipe
| Item | Crafting Station | Materials |
|---|---|---|
| Rubber | Fabricator | Lucifer Rotsac x2 |
Every two Lucifer Rotsacs produce one Rubber.
What Rubber Is Used For
Rubber becomes important almost immediately after unlocking better equipment.
It is currently used for crafting items like:
- Basic Fins
- Standard Air Tank
- Air Bladder
- Early mobility upgrades
Without Rubber, progression starts slowing down fairly quickly because several survival upgrades depend on it.
Honestly, it is worth stockpiling a decent amount early because you end up using far more than expected.
Another Important Lucifer Rotsac Use
Lucifer Rotsac is not only used for Rubber.
Later in the game, it can also be processed into:
- Grease
Grease Recipe
| Material | Result |
|---|---|
| Lucifer Rotsac x1 | Grease x1 |
Grease becomes part of several machinery and advanced crafting recipes later on.
However, during the early game, Rubber is usually the better use for your supply.
Inventory Management Tip
Since Lucifer Rotsac plants are common and regrow quickly, it is usually smarter to process them into Rubber immediately rather than carrying huge stacks of raw bulbs around.
Rubber takes less inventory management overall and remains useful for much longer.
You can always return later to gather more bulbs if you suddenly need Grease or additional crafting materials.
Fabricator Power Reminder
One thing newer players sometimes overlook is that Fabricators require power.
The Lifepod Fabricator works automatically, but once you begin building your own base, electricity becomes important.
If your base loses power:
- Fabricators stop functioning
- Crafting becomes unavailable
- Processing resources halts completely
So if your Fabricator suddenly stops working later on, it is probably a base power issue rather than a missing blueprint problem.
