If you’re playing PAYDAY 3 on OVERKILL difficulty and want a strong Assault Rifle build that balances armor, damage, ammo, and dodge, this setup is worth trying. The build combines powerful AR skills with Smoke Grenades, armor regeneration, and additional dodge bonuses to help you survive some of the game’s toughest encounters.
In this guide, we’ll go through the complete OVERKILL Assault Rifle build, including the recommended weapon attachments, secondary weapons, deployables, armor setup, and every important skill you need. The original build was created by Steam user Your Operator and is designed around the August update and beyond.
One of the best things about this setup is that you aren’t locked into a single Assault Rifle. You can choose your preferred AR and use the recommended attachments below while keeping the same overall skill build.

Best Deployables and Tools
Smoke Grenades
Smoke Grenades are an important part of this build because they work directly with your dodge skills.
The Fog Machine and Ghost skill combinations make fighting inside smoke much safer, allowing you to increase your dodge chance significantly. You should make sure Smoke Grenades are part of your loadout when using this build.
Armor Bags
Armor Bags are another major part of the setup.
Several skills in the Juggernaut tree improve your Armor Bags by giving you additional charges and allowing you to restore armor more effectively. This gives you more staying power during longer OVERKILL heists.
Trip Lasers
You can also bring Trip Lasers. They are particularly useful for keeping track of enemies and improving your awareness during combat.
How to Unlock Smoke Grenades, Armor Bags and Trip Lasers
New players may need to unlock some of the equipment used in this build.
Smoke Grenades
Go to CrimeNet/Crime Bonds and check the Sharpshooter section to unlock Smoke Grenades.
Armor Bags
Armor Bags can be unlocked through the Enforcer section.
Trip Lasers
Trip Lasers are unlocked through the Grifter section.
Best Armor Setup
After testing different armor frames, the recommended choice for this build is the Vanguard Frame.
For your armor plates, use:
First Plate: Resistant Plate
The Resistant Plate provides additional protection and helps you absorb more damage.
Second Plate: Impact Plate
The Impact Plate can regenerate fully as long as the armor plate does not break. This helps protect your Resistant Plate and gives you better armor sustain during combat.
The Vanguard Frame can be unlocked through Crime Bonds in the Hacker section.
Soldier Skills
The Soldier side of this build focuses heavily on armor protection, Assault Rifle damage, armor penetration, and ammunition.
Juggernaut Skill Tree
Extra Protection
For every skill equipped in the Juggernaut branch, you gain additional damage reduction for your armor plates.
With this setup, the build gains 6% armor damage reduction.
Armored Up I
Armor Bags come with an additional charge.
This is especially useful because the build depends heavily on armor sustainability during difficult OVERKILL encounters.
Head Guard
Headshot kills reduce your Armor Regeneration time by 0.2 seconds.
Landing headshots consistently will therefore help your armor recover faster.
Armored Up II Aced
If your starting loadout contains an Armor Bag, you receive an additional Armor Bag.
Deploying an Armor Bag also fully restores armor for any heister within 10 meters.
Beast of Burden
You can carry two bags at once.
However, carrying two bags comes with a movement penalty, so keep that in mind while moving around the map.
Commando Skill Tree
The Commando skills are where this build gets much of its Assault Rifle power.
Rifleman Aced
For every skill equipped in the Commando branch, Assault Rifles and LMGs gain additional armor penetration.
With this build, you can reach 0.9 Armor Penetration.
This is extremely useful because enemies can have multiple armor layers. If your armor penetration reaches or exceeds the number of armor layers an enemy has, your attacks can damage their health directly.
Stockpile: Assault Aced
This skill gives you significantly more reserve ammunition.
You can carry 30% more Assault Rifle and LMG reserve ammo, increasing the total ammo bonus to 80%.
This helps the build stay effective during long fights without constantly worrying about running out of ammunition.
Focus Fire Aced
Every successful hit with an Assault Rifle or LMG increases your accuracy and stability.
- Each hit increases accuracy by 2%
- Each miss decreases accuracy by 2%
- Each hit increases stability by 3%
- Each miss decreases stability by 1%
The modifiers reset when you reload or swap weapons.
Hollow-Point Rounds Aced
This is one of the most important damage skills in the build.
Assault Rifles and LMGs deal additional health damage, raising the total health damage bonus for these weapons to 40%.
Grenadier Skills
Scavenger Aced
Ammo pickups have a chance to restore one throwable.
The chance starts at 2% and increases to 5% when the skill is aced.
This works particularly well with the build’s Smoke Grenades, giving you occasional opportunities to recover additional throwables while collecting ammo.
Ninja Skills
The Ninja section focuses on dodge and survivability.
Ghost Skill Tree
Dodge This Aced
For every skill equipped in the Ghost branch, you gain a permanent 2% chance to Dodge incoming damage.
Your maximum Dodge chance can reach 80%, although each active armor plate reduces Dodge chance by 20%.
This creates an interesting balance between armor protection and dodge.
Flow State Aced
Taking non-environmental damage increases your Dodge chance.
The aced version raises the Dodge bonus from taking damage to 6% until you successfully dodge an attack.
Under Pressure Aced
Successfully dodging damage restores 2 health points.
If your health is already full, those points are converted into Adrenaline instead.
On the Run
While sprinting or sliding, and for two seconds afterward, your Dodge chance increases by 15%.
This encourages you to stay mobile during combat instead of standing still.
Fog Machine Skills
The Fog Machine tree is extremely important because it makes Smoke Grenades much stronger.
Heavy Smoker Aced
Every skill equipped in the Fog Machine branch improves your Smoke Grenades.
The build increases:
- Smoke Grenade range by 4% per skill
- Smoke duration by 6% per skill
Stockpile: Smoke Grenades
If you start the heist with Smoke Grenades, you receive an additional Smoke Grenade.
Smokescreen
This is one of the key survival mechanics of the entire build.
If you already have a Dodge chance, standing inside a Smoke Grenade cloud doubles that Dodge chance.
If you have no Dodge chance, you instead receive 25% Dodge.
This is why Smoke Grenades are essential for the build rather than simply being an optional throwable.
Hacker Skills
The Hacker portion of the build improves your Handgun secondary weapon.
Hitman Skill Tree
Bullseye Aced
For every skill equipped in the Hitman branch:
- Handguns deal 2.5% more damage to unmarked targets
- Handguns deal 10% more damage to marked targets
- Handguns gain 5% additional accuracy
This makes your pistol a much more reliable backup weapon.
Stockpile: Handgun Aced
You receive 30% more Handgun reserve ammo, increasing your Handgun ammo bonus to 80%.
Quickdraw
Quickdraw improves how quickly you can switch to and from your Handgun.
It also provides:
- 25% faster weapon swap speed
- 25% faster ADS speed with Handguns
This makes switching to your secondary much smoother when you need it in the middle of combat.
Final Build Overview
This OVERKILL Assault Rifle build combines several strong mechanics into one setup:
- High Assault Rifle damage
- Strong armor penetration
- Increased reserve ammunition
- Armor regeneration
- Multiple Armor Bags
- Dodge bonuses
- Smoke Grenade synergy
- Improved Handgun performance
- Better survivability while moving
The biggest strength of the build is its flexibility. You can choose from several different Assault Rifles instead of being forced to use one specific weapon, while the core Soldier, Ninja, and Hacker skills continue supporting the same overall playstyle.
For OVERKILL difficulty, using Smoke Grenades properly is especially important. The dodge bonuses from the Ghost and Fog Machine skill trees can make a major difference when enemies are dealing heavy damage.
If you want an Assault Rifle build that gives you a mix of damage, armor sustain, mobility, dodge, and strong ammo management, this is a solid setup to try in PAYDAY 3.
