The prologue of The Blood of Dawnwalker gives you a limited amount of time before the Mass ceremony, and you can’t complete every activity before nightfall. Because of that, it’s important to be careful about which quests you spend your time on.

The day is split into eight time segments, and many quests or activities consume one or more of them. Some quests are also much more important than others because they can change what happens to characters or give you equipment and abilities that are useful after the prologue.

I’ve put together the best quests to prioritize before Mass, including the choices that save time, the rewards you can get, and the quests you really shouldn’t skip.

The Blood of Dawnwalker Quests Guide – Like Father, Like Son

Time advances whenever you complete certain activities marked with an hourglass icon.

You’ll also see a number next to the hourglass showing how many time segments the activity will consume.

The entire daytime period has eight time segments. Once all eight are filled, night begins, and you can’t get that daytime time back.

This means you shouldn’t simply complete every quest you see. Some activities are worth far more than others, especially when they provide equipment, manuals, or important story outcomes.

There are some minor story spoilers below because several of these quests have consequences.

Best Quest Order Before Mass

You can’t complete every time-consuming activity listed below, so I’d prioritize them roughly like this:

  1. Live Bait
  2. Deep Down
  3. Withering Away
  4. Like Father, Like Son
  5. Blasphemy
  6. On The Run
  7. Someone Needs a Lesson
  8. Bandit’s Treasure Map
  9. Disturbed

You can also complete several activities that don’t consume time segments, which I’ll cover at the end.

Live Bait

Time: 1–2 hours
Reward: 250 XP

When you first head out into Laslea Glen, your younger siblings will ask you to help them go fishing.

I’d recommend doing Live Bait early because it’s simple and gives you some easy XP.

Agree to help and follow the children to the river. At one point, the younger kids will complain about being tired, and you’ll have the choice to either play tag with them or tell them to keep walking.

I’d choose to simply make them walk.

The reward is the same either way, but playing tag costs an additional hour, which is better saved for another quest.

At the river, search the bushes for the fishing lines and set them up. You’ll then need to spend another hour preparing the bait.

There’s also a small time-saving option here. If you initially tell the children that you don’t have time to help and return later, they’ll set up the fishing lines themselves. You’ll only need to hook the bait.

After that, a soldier will confront you and ask about your father. Your responses don’t change the outcome here. Even if you choose to fight, Uriash eventually steps in and ends the confrontation.

The quest then finishes and you receive 250 XP.

Deep Down

Time: 1 hour
Rewards: 250 XP, 25–50 Denarius, Master Light Braces, Superior Shortsword

Deep Down is one of the quests you should prioritize because the outcome depends on how quickly you complete it.

Find Gavril tending his field southwest of the village. He’ll explain that his brother Lazar has gone missing and ask you to search for him near the peat bogs north of the Blackwater Hollow shrine.

Follow the clues until you find a wagon and footprints, then deal with the wolves near the entrance to the ruins.

Once you enter the ruins, the timing becomes important.

Save Lazar Before It’s Too Late

If five time segments have passed, Lazar will be dead when you find him.

You’ll still be able to return to Gavril and complete the quest, but you’ll only receive:

  • 250 XP
  • 25 Denarius

If you reach Lazar with four time segments or fewer, you’ll find him alive and can return him to his brother.

This gives you the better reward:

  • 250 XP
  • 50 Denarius

So if you’re trying to get the best outcome, don’t leave this quest sitting around for too long.

Loot the Ruins

Even if you arrive too late to save Lazar, the ruins are still worth exploring.

Check both sides of the sarcophagus in the central room to find Master Light Braces and Mireleaf Bracers. The bracers grant a Claw Art ability that can be useful after Mass.

You’ll also encounter a dangerous creature deeper inside the ruins. Make sure you loot it after defeating it because it has a Superior Shortsword called the Undead Warrior’s Sword, which has a fast attack speed.

Withering Away

Time: 1–2 hours
Rewards: 100–200 XP, avoids a major story consequence, unlocks the Like Father, Like Son quest

Withering Away is the quest I’d consider mandatory if you care about avoiding a serious consequence for Coen’s family.

Your father asks you to collect medicinal herbs from Anca, who lives in the forest west of the village.

Once you reach her and pay for the herbs, rain begins.

If you decide to wait out the storm, a fallen tree will destroy Anca’s shed. You’ll then have the option to help her save the herbs before tending to her injuries.

Staying takes an additional hour, so keep the time cost in mind. However, the important thing is that you obtain the medicine and return home before Mass.

When preparing the medicine, follow Anca’s instructions exactly:

  • Hot Water
  • 3 scoops of herbs

You can check her instructions in your inventory if you forget.

Do not ignore this quest or prepare the medicine incorrectly. Failing to give your mother the correct medicine before Mass has devastating consequences for the story.

Like Father, Like Son

Time: 1 hour
Reward: 100 XP and Charge Manual

After completing the important part of Withering Away, you’ll be given the opportunity to train with your father in Like Father, Like Son.

Whether you win or lose the training, you’ll receive:

  • 100 XP
  • Charge Manual

The Charge Manual unlocks an ability that deals 200% attack damage, making it a worthwhile reward for one hour of your limited daytime.

If you’re given the option to skip the training and go directly to Mass, I wouldn’t do it.

Your daytime time segments are limited, but you also can’t get unused time back later. Use the opportunity to collect the XP and manual instead.

Blasphemy

Time: 1 hour
Rewards: 75–850 XP, potentially 25 Denarius and a Daylight Amulet

Blasphemy is one of the more interesting prologue quests because your dialogue choices can significantly change the rewards.

You’ll investigate the theft of a banner made by Gremla for the church. She asks Coen for help because failing to produce the banner could have serious consequences for her.

Search around the area and you’ll find several clues, including:

  • A broken loom
  • Footprints
  • Evidence that the thief used a cane

Follow the clues up the hill east of Gremla’s house and you’ll find Premsyl, who matches the description.

Question him until he admits that he stole the banner.

Best Blasphemy Choice

Your next dialogue choices determine your reward.

If you convince Premsyl to return the banner by saying you have a family to think about, then tell Gremla that he stole it, you’ll receive:

  • 325 XP
  • 25 Denarius

If you tell Premsyl that he hasn’t convinced you about his cause and still tell Gremla the truth, you’ll receive:

  • 350 XP
  • 25 Denarius

The best option for maximizing rewards is to agree with Premsyl’s cause and tell him that maybe he’s right and whatever he does next is on his conscience.

This gives you:

  • 500 XP
  • Daylight Amulet

You can still tell Gremla that Premsyl stole the banner afterward and receive her rewards as well.

If you simply keep Premsyl’s secret and don’t tell Gremla, you’ll only receive 75 XP.

There’s also a story consequence here. If Gremla learns that Premsyl was responsible, she stays in the vampires’ good graces. If you protect his secret, Gremla takes the fall instead.

On The Run

Time: 1 hour
Rewards: 250 XP, potentially 50 Denarius and sausage

If you have another hour to spare, On The Run is an easy way to earn 250 XP.

Find Iorgu near the front gates of the village, southwest of the map. He’s working on his fence and tells you that his pig has escaped.

Follow the tracks toward the river and you’ll find the pig with a man named Kuno.

When you demand that Kuno release the pig, he responds with “Says Who!” and you get two main choices.

You can say “I do”, which starts a fight with Kuno before you chase the pig.

Or you can say “Knyaz Brencis does”, which scares Kuno into releasing the pig without a fight.

After catching the pig, return to Iorgu. He’ll then ask whether you’ll help butcher it.

On The Run Rewards

Your choice determines what you receive:

Choice Reward
Refuse to help butcher it 250 XP + 50 Denarius
Buy the pig and save it 250 XP
Help butcher the pig 250 XP + 50 Denarius + Sausage

If you’re focused purely on rewards, helping butcher the pig gives you the most.

Someone Needs a Lesson

Time: 1 hour
Reward: 250 XP

While exploring Laslea Glen, you’ll eventually encounter Vasil, a young man who has plenty to say about Coen and his family.

Chase him down and confront him. His father, Atanas, eventually gets involved and blames Vasil.

Atanas then asks you to help discipline his son by hitting him with a switch.

You can agree or refuse.

Refusing can lead to an argument and potentially a fight with Atanas, while agreeing means you actually punish Vasil.

Either way, the reward is the same:

250 XP.

So this is another straightforward quest to consider if you have a spare hour.

Bandit’s Treasure Map

Time: 1 hour
Rewards: 200 XP plus treasure

The Bandit’s Treasure Map isn’t actually marked as a normal quest on your map, but it’s one of the better things you can spend an hour doing.

Head east of the village and follow the forest path until you reach a bandit camp.

Entering the encounter will warn you that it consumes one hour.

Defeat the bandits to receive 100 XP, then loot the camp thoroughly. You can find Denarius, jewelry, armor, and a Broad Swing Manual among the rewards.

Inside the cabin, look on the table to find the treasure map.

The map marks the treasure location for you.

Travel there and you’ll find a bear guarding the treasure. Defeat it and dig up the chest for another 100 XP.

The treasure contains:

  • 100 Denarius
  • Minor Fortitude Paste recipe
  • Golden Bowl
  • Polished Long Cleaver
  • Additional valuables

The Polished Long Cleaver is a solid early weapon, while the Broad Swing Manual you can get from the bandit camp adds another useful ability.

Because you get both XP and valuable equipment from this activity, I’d put it fairly high on your list if you have the time.

Disturbed

Time: 1–2 hours
Rewards: 250 XP and 25 Denarius

The final time-consuming quest I’d consider is Disturbed.

Outside the church, you’ll find a cemetery where a woman named Crina is mourning after someone dug up her grandson’s grave and stole the silver crucifix buried inside.

Investigate the grave and follow the footprints until you reach a shed with a broken shovel.

Try to open the secret door and Kostel will confront you for investigating.

Coen’s friend Vladimir eventually intervenes and admits that he was responsible.

He’ll explain his reasons, leaving you with a choice over whether you expose him to Crina.

Either way, Crina rewards you with:

  • 250 XP
  • 25 Denarius

She’ll also ask you to help bury her son.

You can do it as a kind gesture, but it doesn’t provide an additional reward and costs another hour. If you’re trying to maximize what you get from your limited time, you can skip this extra task.

Free XP That Doesn’t Use Time

Not every activity in the prologue consumes one of your eight daytime segments.

If you’ve completed the important quests and still want more XP, there are several smaller activities you can do without using up your time bar.

Enter Not

You can find Enter Not northwest of the village, just to the left of the river.

You’ll discover a deserted house and can retrieve a holy statuette belonging to the church.

The quest gives 100 XP without consuming a time segment.

If a Tree Falls in a Forest

This activity is in the foothills north of the village.

As the name suggests, you’ll find a tree that has fallen on a man. Investigating the area eventually leads you to the body of a soldier.

This also gives 100 XP without consuming daytime time.

Dead Drop

Dead Drop takes you to a mysterious grave at the burial ground east of the village.

Investigate it to find the available rewards and earn 100 XP, again without using one of your eight time segments.

Hunt Predators for Extra XP

You can also earn XP by killing predators such as wolves and wild boars.

This is particularly useful because combat against these animals doesn’t consume one of the limited quest time segments in the same way as the time-consuming activities.

If you’re trying to level up before Mass, take advantage of these encounters whenever you come across them.

More XP means more levels and, eventually, more skill points to spend.

Loot and Steal for Extra Money

The prologue also gives you opportunities to build up some extra money.

Loot containers and other valuable items around the village, then sell anything you don’t need to merchants.

Just be careful around soldiers.

If you’re caught doing something you shouldn’t, you’ll see a ticking warning and part of your time bar will start filling with gray. Getting caught can consume valuable time.

If you’re trying to squeeze as much as possible out of the prologue, avoid unnecessary encounters with soldiers and don’t waste your daytime segments on avoidable consequences.

Best Way to Spend Your Time Before Mass

The biggest thing to remember is that you only have eight daytime time segments before Mass.

You shouldn’t try to complete every single quest. Instead, prioritize quests that either prevent major story consequences, give you strong equipment, unlock abilities, or provide a good amount of XP.

I’d make sure to complete Withering Away, save Lazar through Deep Down, and complete Like Father, Like Son if you have the time. Blasphemy and the Bandit’s Treasure Map are also excellent choices when you’re trying to maximize rewards.

Then use the smaller quests, predator hunts, and time-free activities to squeeze out extra XP without sacrificing your limited time.

Once the eight segments are gone, Mass begins, so make those daytime hours count.
