Timing is everything when chasing the Bean achievement in How to Fish. The game’s clock starts ticking the moment you create your save file, making every second count as you dash from island to island. This achievement challenges players to master speed and efficiency, blending fast resource collection with sharp combat tactics to finish the entire adventure in under an hour.

This approach works equally well solo or with friends in co-op—just invite your teammates right after setting up your save to maximize your run’s efficiency. Keeping the timer tight from the start is crucial to hitting the sub-hour goal.

To stay on track, it’s vital to monitor your time closely—start a stopwatch on your phone immediately and keep it running without pause. Sell practically everything you don’t need along the way, especially items like clams, leeches, snails, and fish yielded from your dynamite blasts to maintain a steady cash flow.

The fundamental strategy here is straightforward: earn money fast, purchase dynamite, bait the boss, then use dynamite to finish the fight quickly. Precision and speed in each phase are key to success.

Before diving in, head to the game settings and disable friendly fire . This simple step prevents accidental hits from teammates disrupting your momentum and saves precious time during combat encounters.

This guide assumes familiarity with the game’s basics, focusing strictly on efficient completion for the Bean achievement. If it’s your first time playing, take the time you need earlier to learn the layouts, NPCs, and mechanics.

Let’s jump into the fastest route to domino through the islands and claim that achievement.

This guide will be quick and easy to complete. If you haven’t played the game yet, go and explore the islands first. Take as much time as you need and get familiar with the NPCs, fish, bosses, weapons, guns, and other creatures.

You’ll begin near the lighthouse on Island 1 . Immediately start collecting clams scattered around the area and sell them to the nearby shopkeeper to accumulate your initial funds.

Interact with the shopkeeper by holding Q to toss a clam into his mouth. He’ll reward you with $1 per clam, so maximize your clam carrying capacity: one in hand and three in your inventory, toggleable via the 1, 2, and 3 keys.

Keep selling until you have around $60. Watching your health is important here; if it dips too low, eat the clams to recover instead of selling them to avoid downtime.

Spend your cash wisely on these essentials:

  • Knife – $45
  • Beer Can – $12
  • Crab Fishing Rod – $3

Give the Beer Can to the man to unlock the beer can bait, a crucial item for attracting the crab boss.

Fish for the crab by casting through your boat windows. Try to trap the crab to simplify the fight—if it escapes, finish it off with your knife.

Once defeated, sell the crab legs and collect the radar and shell. Giving the shell to the man will earn you the coordinates for Island 2. Hop in your boat and set sail.

On Island 2, focus on gathering $25 to purchase dynamite. If you fall short, pick up leeches from the ground to sell.

Throw dynamite into the water to blast fish, then sell the haul. Repeat until you accumulate around $350.

Grab the extra inventory slot at each new island to carry more essential items and upgrade your pistol fully—its damage output will be vital on both Island 2 and 3.

For the Piranha boss, there are two effective methods:

Method 1: Buy dynamite and place it behind the drip slot machine. Then, feed 3 leeches to the girl NPC to unlock the piranha bait. Fish the piranha and lure it over the dynamite. When close, shoot the explosives to halve its health, then use your pistol to finish the fight by circling the piranha and dodging trees.

Method 2: Save up about $500 for 20 dynamites. Split the dynamite piles: half behind the drip slot machine and the other half in a distant ditch. Lure the piranha onto each pile sequentially and detonate. Two well-placed blasts should eliminate it without prolonged combat.

Turn in the boss drop to the girl and proceed to Island 3 .

Buy the fishing rod and the pink bait resembling soap. Always prioritize buying the highest quality regular bait you can afford here—steer clear of mini-boss bait to conserve resources and time.

Catch and sell drip fish repeatedly until you have close to $1,000. Skip side quests like the grill quest to keep your speedrun on track.

If you catch Needlefish or Seahorse, don’t sell them. Instead, deliver these to the homeless man under the coconut tree to obtain the carrot bait, which is needed for the pufferfish boss fight.

Set up two dynamite traps for the pufferfish like before—one behind the drip slot machine and another under a coconut tree farther away. Spawn the pufferfish and lure it onto the first pile before detonating, then quickly retreat toward the second dynamite setup and blow it up again. This should secure the kill efficiently.

To prepare for Island 4, if you feel uncomfortable fighting with just a pistol, invest in purchasing an SMG now.

On Island 4, buy the professional bait and grind money until you’ve amassed around $3,000. Upgrade your SMG with a few cheap mods to handle tricky enemies like the Red Snapper and Eel.

Next, acquire the tuna bait, priced at $1,200. Prepare two dynamite piles, spending about $750 worth on each—one inside the bait shop’s shed and the other in the grassy area in front.

To defeat the Tuna boss, fish it up and lure it into the shed. Detonate the dynamite there to kill the tuna. Then place the tuna carcass on the second dynamite pile and ready yourself for the Albatross boss.

The albatross will spawn overhead across from the gambling station. Wait patiently and shoot the dynamite once it’s positioned over the explosives. This blast takes out the albatross, dropping its head. Pick it up to get Island 5 coordinates.

Upon arrival at Island 5, buy the green shrimp bait. You can cook fish on the lava here, boosting their sell value by 1.5 times—always cook the dynamite-caught food since it restores more health and hunger.

Upgrade your SMG to at least 60 damage. Avoid wasting resources on laser sights or scopes during this run to save valuable time and money.

Begin work on the scientist’s quest by picking up any fish dropped by a dynamite kill. You’ll need to supply 5 creatures, but don’t waste rare catches here—common creatures do fine.

Alternatively, players have noted a faster method might be available: turning in 5 beers from the local shop instead of creatures. If this works in your game version, it’s a huge time saver.

Save about $1,000 to buy dynamite and stack explosives near the shop. Use the scientist’s bait to spawn the first whale, lure it onto the dynamite, and detonate for an instant kill. This also yields the item needed for the final boss fight.

Use any extra dynamite in the water to farm food, cooking it on lava for better supplies to keep your health and hunger bars topped up during the final fight.

For the final boss preparation, invest an additional $1,000 to $2,000 on more dynamite. While explosives will deal heavy damage when the magma whale lands on them, you’ll still rely on your SMG to finish the fight.

Once ready, ascend the volcano to spawn the final boss. Engage it with your SMG while tactically detonating dynamite when the boss moves over your piles. Keep eating cooked food to maintain your health and hunger levels throughout the battle.

The final boss is more manageable than it seems, thanks to your preparation and upgraded weaponry. After defeating it, deliver the final prize to the scientist and grab the boat keys to wrap up your run.

The Bean achievement will unlock immediately if you finish within the hour. Beating the time limit demands sharp focus, efficient farming, and smooth combat execution across every island.

Buy the fishing rod and the pink soap-looking bait.

From this point onward, always buy the best regular bait you can afford. Don’t waste money on mini-boss bait.

Sell the drip fish you catch and keep farming until you have around $1,000.

Skip the grill quest. It takes too much time for a speedrun.

If you catch an endangered Needlefish or Seahorse, don’t sell it.

Take it to the homeless guy under the coconut tree. He will give you the carrot bait, which you need for the pufferfish.

How to Kill the Pufferfish With Dynamite?

Use the same two-pile setup as before.

Place half of your dynamite behind the drip slot machine and the other half under a coconut tree farther away.

Spawn the pufferfish and stand on the first dynamite pile.

When the boss gets close, shoot the explosives.

Then run toward the second pile and wait for the enraged pufferfish to reach you. Detonate the second pile.

That should kill it.

If you’re not comfortable fighting the Island 4 fish with only a pistol, buy the SMG now.

Island 4

Buy the professional bait and farm money until you have around $3,000.

Get the SMG if you haven’t already. The Red Snapper and Eel can be annoying, so put a few cheap upgrades into the weapon.

Next, buy the tuna bait, which costs $1,200.

There are two bosses on this island, so prepare both dynamite traps before starting the fights.

  • Put $750 worth of dynamite inside the shed where you buy the tuna bait.
  • Put another $750 worth in the middle of the grass area in front.

How to Kill the Tuna?

Fish up the tuna and lure it into the shed.

Get the tuna close to the dynamite you placed inside and detonate it. This should kill the tuna.

Take the dead tuna and place it on top of the dynamite pile in the grass.

How to Kill the Albatross?

The albatross spawns in the sky opposite the gambling station.

Watch that area and wait for it to get close to your dynamite.

Shoot the explosives when the albatross is in position.

The explosion kills it and drops its head. Pick it up to get the coordinates for Island 5.

Island 5

Buy the green shrimp bait.

You can now cook fish on the lava for 1.5x their normal sell value. You should also cook the food dropped by dynamite because cooked food restores much more hunger and health.

Upgrade your SMG to 60 damage.

Buy the useful upgrades, but skip the laser and scope. They aren’t worth spending time and money on during this run.

Complete the Scientist’s Quest

Pick up one of the fish dropped by a dynamite kill and use it to start working on the scientist’s quest.

You need to provide 5 creatures.

Don’t waste valuable catches on this quest. Use common creatures whenever possible.

There is also another faster option mentioned by players: you can give the scientist’s quest NPC 5 beers from the nearby shop instead of five creatures. If this option works in your current version, it can save time and valuable fish.

Kill the First Whale

Save around $1,000 and buy dynamite.

Stack the explosives near the shop.

Use the scientist’s bait to spawn the first whale. Lure it toward your dynamite and try to make it jump onto or land on the explosives.

Detonate the dynamite when the whale is in position.

This kills the whale and gives you the item required for the final boss.

While you’re here, use extra dynamite in the water to farm food. Cook the food on the lava so you have plenty of health and hunger supplies for the final fight.

Prepare for the Final Boss

Spend another $1,000–$2,000 on dynamite.

The explosives can deal heavy damage when the magma whale lands on them, but don’t rely entirely on dynamite. Your SMG will still be needed to finish the fight.

Once you’re ready, head up the volcano and spawn the final boss.

Final Boss

Fight the final boss normally with your SMG.

Whenever possible, lure it onto your dynamite piles and detonate them for extra damage.

Keep eating your cooked food if your health or hunger gets low.

The fight is easier than it may look, especially if you prepared enough dynamite and upgraded your SMG.

After killing the boss, take it to the scientist and complete the final step.

Grab the boat keys.

Your run is complete, and the Bean achievement should unlock as long as you finished within the 1-hour limit.

Can’t Complete the Run in 1 Hour?

If you repeatedly exceed the 1-hour limit and the Bean achievement isn’t unlocking, consider adjusting your strategy or focusing more on speed during resource farming and boss fights to optimize your run further.
