Getting your first proper ship in Windrose is one of the biggest early milestones. The game starts you off with a basic rowboat, but that’s only meant for short trips — the real progression begins once you unlock your first full ship.
This guide explains exactly how to unlock it quickly, what to prepare, and how to avoid wasting time.
When You Unlock Your First Ship
You don’t get your real ship immediately. It becomes available through a main quest:
- “Need a Bigger Boat”
This quest starts after Doc Galen returns to your camp and explains the situation after the shipwreck. From here, your objective becomes clear:
- Find missing crew members
- Investigate shipwrecks
- Repair a usable ship
Many players rush straight to the shipwrecks without preparing, which slows everything down because they end up going back and forth for materials.
The faster approach is to prepare everything in advance.
What You Need Before Leaving
If you want to finish this quickly in one go, carry these materials:
- 100 Wood
- 20 Nails
- 10 Rope (from Plant Fiber)
- 20 Coarse Fabric
This lets you repair the correct ship immediately when you find it instead of farming on the spot.
Extra Preparation (Saves a Lot of Time)
Before heading out, make sure you are properly set up:
- Reach at least Level 2
- Craft a Copper weapon
- Wear a full gear set
- Carry food and bandages
- Claim a free healing potion from Doc Galen
Also, place a Fast Travel Point at your base so you can quickly return and manage resources if needed.
Finding the Correct Shipwreck
During the quest, you will explore multiple shipwrecks:
- The first few are not usable
- You should still loot them for materials like Nails
- Eventually, you’ll find the repairable shipwreck
If you didn’t bring enough materials, this area usually has enough resources nearby to farm what you need.
Repairing the Ship
Once you reach the correct shipwreck and have all required materials:
- Interact with the ship
- Complete the repair process
However, you are not done yet — you still need a crew.
How to Find the Crew (Required Step)
You need to rescue 7 crew members before the ship becomes usable.
This is done through the “Rescue the Crew” quest, where you locate and free them from different camps.
Important Tip
The last camp is the hardest, so approach it carefully:
- Use ranged attacks to pull enemies one by one
- Avoid fighting the entire group at once
- Break the boss’s guard using ranged pressure before going in
Once all crew members are rescued:
- Return to the shipwreck
- Interact with it again
- Complete the quest
Your ship will then spawn in the water, fully repaired and ready to use.
This quest is designed to feel like a big step forward, but with the right preparation, you can complete it much faster than expected without unnecessary backtracking.
Once you get your first ship, the game shifts from survival to exploration, and everything starts moving at a much better pace.
