When I first loaded into Clean the Library, I thought it would be a relaxing game about putting books back on shelves. A few minutes later, I realized there’s actually a lot more strategy involved than simply grabbing random books.

If you don’t organize things efficiently, you’ll spend hours running around trying to find a single missing volume. Luckily, once you understand how the shelving system works, everything becomes much easier.

This guide covers the basics, the best upgrades to unlock first, and a few tricks that can save you a surprising amount of time.

How Clean the Library Works

The gameplay loop is simple at first glance:

  1. Pick up books scattered around the library.
  2. Check each book’s category.
  3. Find the correct bookshelf.
  4. Place the book in the proper order.
  5. Earn Shelf Points.
  6. Spend those points on upgrades.

As you complete more shelves, you’ll eventually unlock additional floors with even more books to organize.

Understand Book Categories First

Every book belongs to a specific category.

For example, you might pick up a book labeled:

  • Horror
  • Moderation Notes
  • History
  • Science

Each category has its own bookshelf.

Before carrying books around, always read the label so you know exactly where it belongs.

Putting books into the wrong section only slows you down.

Books Must Also Be in the Correct Order

One thing many new players overlook is that placing books on the correct bookshelf isn’t enough.

Each collection also needs to be arranged in numerical order.

For example:

  • Volume 1
  • Volume 2
  • Volume 3
  • Volume 4
  • Volume 5

If Volume 3 is missing, the collection isn’t complete even if every other book is on the shelf.

Always check the numbering before assuming you’re finished.

Carry Multiple Books

You don’t have to return after every single pickup.

Your character can carry:

Up to five books at once.

Try filling your inventory before heading back to the shelves.

Making fewer trips around the library saves a surprising amount of time over a long play session.

The Best Way to Find Books

Probably the biggest tip that helped me was searching by color instead of title.

Bright-colored books stand out much more than darker ones.

I’d recommend starting with colors like:

  • Bright Green
  • White
  • Red
  • Lime

These are much easier to spot from a distance.

Dark-colored books like black, brown, or dark blue tend to blend into the shelves, making them much harder to locate quickly.

Personally, I ignored the darker books until later, and it made the first floor much less frustrating.

Group Similar Books Together

Sometimes you’ll find several books that look nearly identical.

Instead of trying to remember where each one came from, place similar-looking books together in one temporary spot while sorting.

Once you’ve gathered them, it’s much easier to compare titles, categories, and volume numbers before placing them on the shelf.

It sounds like a small trick, but it prevents a lot of unnecessary backtracking.

Don’t Waste Time Searching for One Missing Book

This is probably the mistake most players make.

Let’s say your shelf looks like this:

  • Volume 1
  • Volume 2
  • Missing
  • Volume 4
  • Volume 5

Instead of spending ten minutes searching for that single missing book, move on to another collection.

More often than not, you’ll naturally come across the missing volume while organizing something else.

Trying to force-complete one shelf before touching another usually wastes more time than it saves.

How to Earn Shelf Points

Every completed collection rewards you with Shelf Points.

These points are used to unlock permanent upgrades that make organizing much faster.

The more collections you complete, the quicker you’ll earn additional upgrades.

Best Upgrades to Unlock First

Not every upgrade is equally useful early on.

Here’s the order I’d recommend.

1. Magnet (Best First Upgrade)

If you’re only buying one upgrade first, make it Magnet.

Magnet attracts nearby books from the same collection, reducing the amount of running you have to do.

As you level it up, both its range and effectiveness improve, making later floors much easier.

2. Galore

Galore is another excellent choice.

It helps generate or gather books from the same collection more efficiently and becomes even stronger as you reduce its cooldown through upgrades.

Many experienced players consider Magnet and Galore the two strongest abilities in the game.

3. Scan

Once you’ve unlocked the basics, Scan becomes extremely useful.

Instead of guessing where a book belongs, Scan highlights the correct bookshelf for your currently held book.

This is especially helpful once the library becomes much larger.

4. Auto Organize

Auto Organize automatically sorts the books you’re carrying by their numbers.

It’s more of a convenience upgrade than a necessity, but it definitely helps once you’re carrying multiple books at once.

5. Movement Upgrades

Don’t overlook simple movement upgrades like:

  • Speed
  • Jump Height

They might not sound exciting, but you’ll spend most of the game running between shelves. Even small movement boosts noticeably improve your overall efficiency.

Recommended Upgrade Order

If you’re wondering what to buy first, I’d go with this order:

  1. Magnet
  2. Galore
  3. Scan
  4. Auto Organize
  5. Speed and Jump upgrades

This progression makes every future floor much easier to manage.

What Happens After Completing the First Floor?

Once every collection on the first floor has been properly organized, you’ll unlock the next floor.

The second floor follows the same core mechanics but introduces additional books and longer organizing sessions.

Don’t expect to finish the entire library quickly—it can easily take several hours if you’re aiming to complete everything.

Best Tips for Faster Progress

If you’re trying to organize the library as efficiently as possible, keep these tips in mind:

  • Focus on one bright-colored book collection at a time.
  • Carry the maximum of five books whenever possible.
  • Organize books by both category and volume number.
  • Skip missing books and come back later instead of searching endlessly.
  • Buy Magnet as your first upgrade.
  • Unlock Galore as soon as possible.
  • Use Scan once the library becomes difficult to navigate.
  • Save darker-colored books for later since they’re harder to spot.
  • Group similar-looking books together before shelving them.

Clean the Library is much more about organization than speed. The players who finish quickly aren’t necessarily moving faster—they’re simply following a smarter system.

Searching by bright book colors, carrying five books at a time, ignoring missing volumes until later, and prioritizing upgrades like Magnet and Galore will make the experience far less overwhelming. Once those habits become second nature, even the larger floors feel much more manageable.
