Temporary status effects are crucial to monitor in Welcome to Elderfield, as they can significantly influence your combat and exploration performance. Blessings can boost your character’s abilities, while curses might leave you struggling in tough encounters or worse mining sessions, making it essential to understand how to manage these modifiers effectively.

Most of these effects change your stats by 10% per stack, with a maximum of 5 stacks. That means a five-stack blessing gives a +50% bonus, while a five-stack curse gives a -50% penalty to the same stat.

Here are the common blessings and curses, how their stacks work, and how you can remove them.

Throughout your journey, you’ll encounter various blessings that provide helpful stat increases. These include boosts to attack, defense, magic, agility, and more. Each blessing stacks up to five times, enhancing its positive effect by 10% per stack.

You can get these effects from God Shrines, moonrise and sleep events, combat, certain food, and potions.

You can also get different blessings and curses from God Shrines, so it is worth knowing where to find them. You can also check our Treasure Rooms of Old Gods guide to find the related treasure room locations.

By contrast, curses impose penalties on the same stats, similarly stacking up to five times to maximize their negative impact. Mining is a common cause for acquiring curses, though enemy attacks, Moonrise events, and some God Shrines may also inflict them.

  • Fear — -10% Hit Rate/ stack
  • Doom — -10% Luck/ stack

Generally, you pick up the curses from Mining. However, enemy attacks, Moonrise, God Shrines, and bad rolls can also give you negative effects.

Managing these buffs and debuffs effectively can turn the tide in battle or mining. Luckily, several methods exist to clear or maintain status effects depending on your strategy.

The most straightforward way to remove all temporary blessings and curses is by bathing at home. This resets your HP and MP as well, making it ideal after a tough mining run or battle where curses have stacked up.

1. Bathe at Home

Although bathing removes all non-permanent effects including beneficial blessings, it’s a reliable reset for when curses outweigh your buffs. This is often the go-to after an unlucky mining session filled with curses.

For a bad mining run, going home and taking a bath is usually considered.

2. Use the Soul Moon

Another opportunity to cleanse status effects arises during the Soul Moon event that may appear at midnight. This rare occurrence fully restores HP, MP, and removes all blessings and curses simultaneously.

When it appears at midnight, it restores your HP and MP and clears your blessings and curses.

For more selective purification, certain consumables like Restore Potions are invaluable. These items remove specific curses without wiping your beneficial buffs. In addition, Holy Water and unique food can grant new blessings, helping maintain your edge.

Some consumables can also help you with individual status effects.

For specific curses, Restore Potions can remove certain effects. Holy Water and some food can also give you blessings.

This is useful when you want to remove a bad effect without removing all your current buffs.

4. Check Special Blessings

Keep an eye on special blessings that persist beyond standard cleansing methods. For example, Cat’s Mystery remains active even after bathing at home, offering strategic advantages if you plan accordingly.

Heavy Eyelids Status Effect

Some status effects require different remedies. The Heavy Eyelids debuff triggers after remaining awake for two days, which lowers your experience gain by about 15%. Taking a bath won’t clear this—only resting and sleeping will remove it.

After moonrise on the second day, you can receive this effect, which reduces EXP gain to around 85%.

It does not stack, and taking a bath will not remove it.

You need to sleep to get rid of Heavy Eyelids.

Tax-Related Status Effects

Tax-related curses like Carrion, Blight, and Tax Plague form another distinct category. These cannot be lifted by bathing and persist until the in-game Tax Man returns, demanding specific strategies to handle.

Carrion, Blight, and Tax Plague will not be removed after taking a normal bath. These effects last until the Tax Man returns.

What to Do After a Bad Mine Run

After a rough mining attempt that leaves you burdened with multiple curses, heading home to take a bath resets your status effects—though you forfeit active blessings as well. It’s wise to assess your current buffs’ value before cleansing.

You will lose your temporary blessings too, so make sure to check your current buffs first. If the bonuses are not worth keeping, the bath will help you to reset your status effects before you go back out of the home.

For players aiming to master character progression fully, understanding status effects ties into unlocking powerful Ritual Skills. Check out dedicated resources on Elderfield Ritual Skills for comprehensive methods to maximize your builds.
