In this post, I will tell you about the recommended time targets for a Terrified run, the most important Runes to unlock, the best Power-Ups to choose, and some useful tricks for dealing with each boss.

From my experience, speed is extremely important in this mode. The longer we stay in a run, the more HP the monsters can have, so finishing levels efficiently makes the later stages much easier to manage.

Some of the Rune combinations below can also make a massive difference to your damage. If you get the right setup early enough, you can move through the levels much faster and have a much better chance of reaching the boss room before things become overwhelming.

Time Allocation

You should try to finish the earlier levels quickly and aim to reach the boss room around the recommended time. The longer you spend playing, the higher the monsters’ maximum HP becomes, which can make the rest of the run much harder.

Here are the time targets I recommend:

  • Levels 1–5: Try to finish within around 5–7 minutes
  • Levels 6–10: Try to finish within around 14–18 minutes
  • Levels 11–15: Try to enter the Boss Room at Level 15 before around 28 minutes

Keeping an eye on your time throughout the run is important. If we waste too much time early, the increased monster HP can make the later levels much more difficult than they need to be.

Important Runes in Terrified Mode

As you kill more monsters, you can unlock additional Runes. However, unlocking too many Runes also increases the size of the Rune pool, which means the chance of getting the specific Runes you want becomes lower.

Because of that, I recommend focusing on unlocking the important Runes you actually want for a Terrified run.

Pact of Power – Must Have

Pact of Power is easily one of the most important Runes for this mode. It can help you deal massive damage and speed through a large part of the run.

The problem is that if you have already unlocked a large number of Runes, getting Pact of Power from the generator can become much more difficult.

Personally, I recommend restarting the run if you cannot get Pact of Power before Level 4. Without it, you may struggle more with the upcoming levels and lose valuable time.

If you want to make your Terrified run easier, this is the Rune I would prioritize the most.

Leader Kill and Elites Frailty

These two Runes work extremely well together and are probably the second most important combination to look for.

Elite monsters are the enemies with special buffs, including:

  • Purple – Regen
  • Green – Poison
  • Frost – Slowing and Stun

With Leader Kill and Elites Frailty, you can focus on eliminating Elite monsters first and then build up the damage multiplier against the remaining enemies.

This combination is also very useful during boss fights.

Try to find an angle where you can damage both an Elite monster and the boss at the same time. If you can kill the Elite while continuing to damage the boss, your overall damage can increase significantly.

Note: Belchers are the Boomerang Monsters, while Swarmers are the Rolling Monsters.

Boots of Jumping, Cape of Hovering and Airborne Buff

These Runes are another great combination, and you will probably come across them fairly often.

The main idea is to keep dealing damage while jumping and take advantage of the hovering effect by holding Space.

This becomes especially useful against certain bosses because staying airborne can cause them to lose their target.

The Double Jump, Hovering effect, and Airborne damage bonuses can work very nicely together. If you get this setup, try to stay in the air when possible while continuing to attack.

I will explain more about how this works against specific bosses later in the guide.

Pristine Assault

With Pristine Assault, you want to keep your HP as high as possible because maintaining full health allows you to deal more damage.

If you have this Rune, I recommend choosing the Kill Streak Healing Power-Up. This makes it much easier to maintain your HP while continuing to clear enemies.

The combination works particularly well when you are trying to move quickly through the levels without spending unnecessary time healing.

Other Useful Runes

Pact of Blood is another good Rune to consider, although it comes with a major downside.

It consumes 50% of your health and reduces your maximum HP to 30. If you are confident that you can survive with the reduced health, it can still be worth taking because it makes farming Bloodpoints easier.

If you manage to get:

  • Pact of Power
  • Pact of Blood
  • Vitality Buff

You can make the run significantly easier and have enough damage to progress quickly.

Rune Conclusion

If I had to choose just one Rune to prioritize for Terrified Mode, it would definitely be Pact of Power.

The other Runes can be extremely helpful, but Pact of Power is the one that can make the biggest difference when it comes to speeding through the run.

Power-Up Recommendations

Here is how I would rank the Power-Ups based on my experience with Terrified Mode.

1. Kill Streak Healing – Level 1

Rank: S

This is one of the first Power-Ups I would choose.

You do not have much time to spend around the healing pond, especially when you are trying to keep your run fast. Kill Streak Healing helps you recover HP while continuing to clear enemies.

Once you have it at Level 1, I would generally focus on taking damage Power-Ups.

2. Rending Slice – Level 1 to Max

Rank: S

Rending Slice is the best damage Power-Up in my experience.

Whenever it appears, I recommend choosing it and continuing to upgrade it as much as possible.

If you are looking purely at damage, this should be one of your highest priorities throughout the run.

3. Crushing Sprint – Level 1

Rank: A+

Crushing Sprint gives you additional damage after getting kills within a short period.

Level 1 is generally enough early on unless you do not have any better Power-Up choices available.

Once you already have your important damage upgrades, you can start investing more levels into it.

4. Up and Go – Level 1

Rank: A

The knockback effect can be useful when you get surrounded or stuck between monsters.

It can also be helpful against the Knocker Moth boss, which I will mention again in the boss section.

For most situations, Level 1 is enough.

5. Plated – Level 1 to Level 2

Rank: A+

Plated is a useful defensive option.

If you can get it to Level 2, it can help block some incoming damage and give you a little more room for mistakes during difficult fights.

6. Kill Streak Healing – Level 2

Once you already have the important Power-Ups mentioned above, upgrading Kill Streak Healing becomes a good option.

The extra healing can help you maintain your HP and continue moving through the levels without wasting time.

7. Crushing Sprint – Level 2 to Max

After getting your other important upgrades, you can continue investing in Crushing Sprint.

It becomes a better choice once your core damage and survival setup is already established.

8. Resolve – Level 1

Rank: B

Resolve is decent, but I usually only take it at Level 1.

Unless there are no better Power-Ups available, I would not prioritize upgrading it further.

9. Shield Bash

Rank: F

I do not find Shield Bash particularly useful.

However, depending on the available choices, it can still be better than spending time with the healing pond.

10. Lasting Pond

Rank: F

Lasting Pond is another Power-Up I generally avoid.

There are enemies such as Bulls and Knocker Moths that can knock you away, and the time spent dealing with the pond can become wasted time.

Remember that the longer the run takes, the more difficult the upcoming levels can become.

For that reason, I prefer focusing on Power-Ups that improve damage, mobility, or survival while keeping the run moving.

Boss Tricks

Each boss can be handled a little differently. Using the environment, staying airborne, and taking advantage of certain movement mechanics can make these fights much easier.

Spikesspitter Overlord – Standing Laser Boss

Do not stand too close to this boss.

Try to maintain a medium distance so you have enough room to react and dodge its laser attacks.

Since the boss uses ranged attacks and the terrain is randomly generated, you can try baiting it toward a lava area.

Once you have positioned it well, start moving around while attacking.

Keeping your distance gives you more room to dodge while continuing to deal damage safely.

Mega Swarmer – Rolling Eye Boss

This is probably one of the easier bosses to dodge.

When you see the boss starting to retreat, prepare to jump.

If you double jump, the boss can lose its target and begin bouncing in the air. This gives you a very good opportunity to attack it safely.

You can also try baiting the Mega Swarmer into a lava pool.

Using the Double Jump mechanic properly can make this fight much easier.

Plated Bull Slug – Bull Boss

There are two main ways I recommend dealing with this boss.

Method One: Use the Lava Pool

Try to bait the boss toward a lava pool.

Once it becomes stuck there, use your dash to adjust your position and stay around the corner or near the outer edge of the area.

This can keep the boss trapped while allowing you to continue attacking from a safer position.

Method Two: Use a Corner

The second method is to position yourself in a corner.

When the boss charges toward you, keep jumping and try to bait it into crashing into the corner or wall.

When it gets stuck, you will have a good opportunity to use your skills and deal damage.

Both methods can work well, so use whichever one is easier based on the arena layout.

Speed Dicer – Melee Swing Boss

Double jumping can make this boss much easier to handle.

When you stay airborne with a Double Jump, the boss can basically lose its target, giving you a safer opportunity to attack.

You can also try baiting it into a lava pool and then continue attacking while staying out of danger.

If you have the airborne Rune setup mentioned earlier, this fight becomes even more favorable.

Knocker Moth Matriarch – Flying Bull

Try to find a corner or an angle near the door where the boss can lose its target.

Positioning is important during this fight.

If you have the Up and Go Power-Up, keep jumping to take advantage of its effects and create more space between yourself and the boss.

Using the environment properly can make the fight much easier than simply trying to run around the arena.

A Trick That Works on All Bosses

There is one useful trick that can work against every boss.

You may get Runes that increase your damage while you are airborne, along with Runes that give you increasing damage whenever you kill an Elite Monster.

Because of this, try to find an angle where you can damage an Elite Monster and the boss at the same time.

If you kill the Elite while continuing to hit the boss, you can significantly increase your boss-killing speed.

When choosing which Elite Monster to kill first, I recommend prioritizing them in this order:

  1. Ice Elite – The slowing effect can severely limit your movement and make the fight much harder.
  2. Poison Elite – The green Poison Elite should be your next priority.
  3. Regen Elite – The purple Regen Elite can be dealt with after the others.

Always keep an eye on Elite enemies during boss fights. Removing the most dangerous ones first can give you much more freedom to move and focus on the boss.

Terrified Mode becomes much easier when we focus on speed, damage, and the right Rune combinations.

For me, Pact of Power is the most important Rune to look for, while Rending Slice and Kill Streak Healing are some of the best Power-Ups to prioritize during a run.

Try to keep your level completion times low, stay airborne when it gives you an advantage, and use the boss arena environment to your benefit.

Once you learn how the different bosses react to jumping, hovering, corners, and lava pools, you can make many of these fights much safer and faster.

Good luck with your Terrified runs!
