DragonSword: Awakening gives you a pretty large roster to experiment with, and thankfully, its characters are surprisingly well-balanced. There isn’t really a hero here who becomes completely useless simply because they’re sitting lower on a tier list.

- Which Characters Should You Invest In?
What matters more is team synergy.
A lower-ranked character can perform extremely well when paired with heroes who complement their status effects, crowd control, or damage type. Investment matters too. Levels, upgrades, and resources can significantly improve a character, so don’t feel like you have to abandon someone you’ve already invested heavily in just because they’re ranked B Tier.
With that in mind, here’s how the current DragonSword: Awakening roster stacks up.
DragonSword Awakening Tier List
| Tier | Characters |
|---|---|
| S Tier | Theresia, Lute, Reina, Ornette, Kalsion, Sion |
| A Tier | Charlotte, Roxy, Castella, Aria, Dana, Kalien, Astria, Othello |
| B Tier | Alex, Tarte, Cerese, Eileen |
| Unranked / Needs More Testing | Johnny |
One small clarification is needed here. Eileen was included among the B-Tier assessments but was also mentioned as still needing further assessment. For now, I’ve kept her in B Tier provisionally, while Johnny remains unranked.
S Tier – Theresia
Theresia is arguably the strongest overall character in DragonSword: Awakening right now.
What makes her particularly dangerous is that she isn’t locked into doing one thing. Her kit revolves around switching between Consecration and Celestial Verdict, allowing you to apply Bleed or Stun depending on what the situation requires.
Divine Arc lets Theresia rapidly close the distance to an enemy, deal heavy damage, and apply Bleed. Holy Rise provides another strong damage option that can also inflict Bleed.
That combination of mobility, damage, status effects, and control makes her incredibly flexible.
The only real obstacle is learning how Consecration and Celestial Verdict work together. Theresia isn’t quite as straightforward as someone like Lute, but the effort pays off.
Best for: Bleed teams, high DPS, crowd control and experienced players.
S Tier – Lute
If Theresia is one of the strongest characters overall, Lute is one of the easiest powerful characters to recommend to a beginner.
His toolkit has a little bit of everything.
Stun Slash damages and stuns enemies, immediately giving you some control over a fight. Healing Circle can rescue you from a dangerous situation and also heals allies, adding valuable team utility.
Then there’s Sword Grab, which lets Lute capture an enemy and use it to attack others.
Finally, Relic Fall provides substantial AoE damage when timed correctly.
There simply aren’t many serious weaknesses here. You get damage, healing, stun, AoE and crowd control without dealing with an excessively complicated playstyle.
Lute is therefore one of the safest characters to invest resources into.
Best for: Beginners, general-purpose teams, healing, crowd control and AoE.
S Tier – Reina
Reina takes considerably more practice.
Her defining feature is airborne combat, and players who learn how to properly take advantage of it can get excellent results.
Both Rising Cutter and Wind Slayer can inflict Airborne while simultaneously dealing damage. Once enemies are in the air, Reina can continue chaining different attacks.
Tempest gives her another powerful option when facing a dangerous enemy directly.
The result is a highly mobile character capable of creating extended offensive sequences while airborne.
However, Reina isn’t someone I’d expect every newcomer to immediately understand. Her potential depends much more heavily on actually learning how her attacks interact.
Best for: Airborne teams, combos, mobility and experienced players.
S Tier – Ornette
Ornette combines powerful attacks with Shock-based gameplay.
Both of her active abilities can inflict Shock, giving her immediate synergy with teams built around the status.
Holy Cross is the heavier offensive option and deals considerable damage based on her attack power.
Holy Circle isn’t as impressive purely from a damage perspective, but that’s not really why you’re using it. It increases Ornette’s Critical Damage by 30%, which synergizes nicely with Judgment and Holy Grail.
She therefore brings considerably more to a team than simply raw attack damage.
Best for: Shock teams, critical damage and offensive compositions.
S Tier – Kalsion
Kalsion is a powerhouse for anyone who wants an aggressive melee character.
The King uses Blaze, which can fire bursts of fire energy at enemies. Flame Wave simultaneously deals damage and increases his attack power, allowing Kalsion to become increasingly threatening once his offense gets going.
He can also charge directly into combat and generate shock waves capable of finishing enemies within the surrounding area.
Alternative modes give him additional flexibility instead of forcing you into one repetitive approach.
If your idea of fun is charging straight into enemies and overwhelming them with melee pressure, Kalsion is one of the best choices available.
Best for: Melee combat, aggressive teams and sustained offensive pressure.
S Tier – Sion
Sion deserves his place among the game’s elite characters.
His playstyle primarily revolves around Divine Crash and Divine Smash. Both attacks deal significant damage and can apply Shock to enemies.
There’s another layer to these abilities: Relics.
Sion can create Relics through his attacks and then recover them to generate additional damage. Divine Smash is particularly interesting because it immediately recovers the Relic, letting you capitalize on the mechanic quickly.
Combine that with excellent DPS and strong enemy-control potential, and Sion becomes particularly valuable in compositions that capitalize on knockdowns.
He’s both powerful individually and useful as part of a coordinated setup.
Best for: DPS, Shock, Relic mechanics and knockdown teams.
A Tier – Charlotte
Charlotte deserves an important disclaimer:
If you’re specifically building around an assassin playstyle, she can easily feel S Tier.
She’s currently unique because of her ability to exploit stealth and invisibility.
Charlotte can summon a clone while turning invisible. The clone subsequently explodes, giving the ability offensive value in addition to its utility.
Her daggers can apply Poison, gradually draining enemy health.
Illusion Kick provides access to Airborne interactions, while Shadow Grab gives her a way to slam enemies back down.
That gives Charlotte an unusually broad collection of tools for an assassin.
Best for: Assassin builds, stealth, Poison and mobile combat.
A Tier – Roxy
Roxy is one of the easier characters to recommend if you’re interested in Bleed.
She might not be the absolute strongest Bleed specialist, but her mechanics are straightforward and effective.
Crimson Spiral sends Roxy forward into an enemy, dealing damage and inflicting Bleed.
Bloody Shower fires arrows forward, applying Bleed to enemies caught by the attack.
Bleeding Grab and Kick Storm give Roxy additional control over enemy movement, making it easier to dictate where a fight takes place.
She doesn’t have Theresia’s overall ceiling, but she’s considerably easier to understand.
Best for: Bleed teams, beginners and enemy manipulation.
A Tier – Castella
Don’t dismiss Castella simply because she’s one of the earlier characters you can unlock.
Castella is extremely effective at controlling space.
She can knock down groups of enemies and push them away, giving you breathing room and allowing your team to reposition. Her Howling effects provide additional ways to manipulate enemies.
Better still, none of this requires mastering an especially complicated mechanic.
Castella is the sort of character who simply does her job reliably.
Best for: Beginners, knockdown teams and crowd control.
A Tier – Aria
Aria is an interesting ranged character because she isn’t limited to straightforward projectile attacks.
Her bombs provide substantial explosive damage, and Switch-On gives you some control over when those explosions occur.
She can also use multiple bolts when you want a more conventional ranged approach.
That mixture makes Aria surprisingly versatile.
She’s also available relatively early, so you don’t necessarily have to wait until late progression to start putting together a capable ranged setup.
Best for: Ranged damage, explosions, early teams and versatile builds.
A Tier – Dana
Dana fills a more unusual hybrid support role.
Much of her kit revolves around her summon, Chako.
Chako isn’t simply there to deal extra damage. The summon can damage enemies, apply Frost and inflict Knockdown.
It can even protect allies behind a shield.
That mixture of offense, status effects and defensive support makes Dana useful in quite a few compositions, although she’s more specialized than the heroes occupying S Tier.
Best for: Support, Frost teams, summons and defensive utility.
A Tier – Kalien
Kalien has plenty of potential, but you need to put some effort into learning her.
Her abilities take the form of a fox, including Fox Chase and Fox Parade.
Understanding the fox’s movement path is essential. If you repeatedly position these abilities poorly, you’re wasting a substantial portion of Kalien’s potential.
Master them and the picture changes considerably.
Both abilities can deal damage while applying Burn, allowing Kalien to steadily chip away at enemy health.
Best for: Burn teams, experienced players and damage-over-time setups.
A Tier – Astria
If maximum attack distance is what you’re after, Astria deserves your attention.
Precision Shot gives her some of the longest range in DragonSword: Awakening.
Siege Assault lets Astria enter Precision Shot mode while providing a movement boost that helps her take advantage of that exceptional range.
Wide Shot takes a different approach, firing arrows in a fan pattern capable of impaling several enemies simultaneously.
Precision Shot’s mobility restrictions can make her feel somewhat awkward, but her sheer ranged potential keeps her firmly in A Tier.
She also works particularly well alongside characters such as Theresia and Lute.
Best for: Extreme range, ranged DPS and Theresia/Lute compositions.
A Tier – Othello
Othello is one of the more attractive options for a dedicated Frost composition.
His Ice Spears allow him to quickly accumulate Cold stacks before transitioning into powerful follow-up attacks.
You aren’t just getting damage from the mechanic either.
The Cold/Ice Spear setup can also slow enemy movement, giving your team another way to control an encounter.
There’s a learning requirement, though. Othello becomes considerably harder to use effectively if you aren’t consistently creating and stacking Ice Spears.
Best for: Frost teams, Cold stacks and enemy slowing.
B Tier – Alex
Alex isn’t necessarily weak. He’s simply too defensive for the current meta compared with the stronger alternatives.
Down Smash can interrupt enemy momentum by applying Knockdown.
Guard Stance then leans heavily into Alex’s defensive identity, reducing the rate at which his Super Armor is depleted.
There will absolutely be team compositions where that defensive utility is valuable. The problem is that Alex’s niche doesn’t translate into the same universal usefulness offered by higher-ranked heroes.
Best for: Defensive teams, Super Armor and Knockdown utility.
B Tier – Tarte
Tarte’s performance depends heavily on properly managing Holy Orbs.
Bolt Bubble can continuously generate these orbs, while Lightning Shock fires a bolt forward.
Ideally, you’re combining these mechanics rather than treating the abilities independently.
Tarte can also provide some healing, giving her additional support utility.
The problem isn’t that her kit doesn’t work. It’s that she’s relatively situational and requires more setup than several stronger characters.
Best for: Holy Orb setups, hybrid damage and light healing.
B Tier – Cerese
Cerese becomes considerably more interesting when placed into a Frost-focused team.
Ice Storm is arguably the highlight of her kit because of its ability to control enemy movement and potentially turn an unfavorable encounter around.
Ice Turn and Frozen Spike can provide damage alongside Frost and Airborne effects.
That’s a respectable collection of tools.
Unfortunately, Cerese doesn’t slot naturally into as many compositions as the characters above her. There are also stronger options competing for similar roles.
Best for: Frost compositions and crowd control.
B Tier – Eileen
Eileen is currently difficult to place definitively.
Her halberd can deal respectable damage, while Brave One provides team support by increasing allies’ morale.
Barraging Spear adds another offensive option.
The issue is that her damage currently feels somewhat underwhelming. If Brave One and Barraging Spear had stronger damage output, Eileen would be much easier to recommend.
She can still make sense in an Airborne-focused team, so B Tier doesn’t mean she’s unusable.
Eileen has also been identified as requiring additional assessment, so I’d treat this placement as provisional rather than final.
Best for: Airborne compositions and team support.
What About Johnny?
Johnny remains unranked for now.
There isn’t enough assessment information here to confidently put him alongside the other characters. Rather than guessing at a placement, it’s better to leave Johnny outside the tier list until his performance has been properly evaluated.
Best DragonSword Awakening Characters for Beginners
For a new player, Lute is probably the easiest overall recommendation.
He gives you damage, Stun, healing, crowd control and AoE without forcing you to learn overly complicated mechanics immediately.
Castella and Roxy are also worth considering if you want straightforward characters.
Theresia is stronger overall, but you’ll need more practice to properly combine Consecration and Celestial Verdict.

What Is the Best Team in DragonSword Awakening?
There’s no single party that automatically beats everything because team synergy is more important than simply stacking S-Tier characters.
For example, throwing Theresia, Reina and Ornette together just because they’re S Tier isn’t necessarily better than building around a specific status or crowd-control interaction.
A particularly attractive core is Theresia + Lute + Astria.
Theresia gives you powerful close-range damage, Bleed and control. Lute adds Stun, healing and AoE utility, while Astria gives the composition exceptional ranged coverage.
Frost-focused players can instead start experimenting with Othello, Dana and Cerese, taking advantage of Cold/Frost effects and movement control.
For Airborne gameplay, Reina should be one of the first characters you consider, with heroes such as Charlotte or Eileen providing additional Airborne synergy.
Which Characters Should You Invest In?
If resources are limited, Lute and Theresia are two of the safest investments.
Theresia has one of the highest overall ceilings in the current roster, while Lute’s combination of simplicity and utility makes it difficult for him to become irrelevant.
Sion, Ornette, Kalsion and Reina round out the current S Tier and are all excellent investments when they complement the team you’re trying to build.
Just don’t make the mistake of treating the tier list as an absolute rule.
DragonSword: Awakening’s roster is balanced enough that team composition and character investment can matter more than an individual tier placement. An upgraded A-Tier hero that perfectly complements your other characters can be far more useful than an S-Tier hero thrown into a team with no real synergy.
For most players, I’d start with Lute if you want the easiest experience, build around Theresia if you want one of the strongest overall characters, and then select the rest of your roster based on whether you want to specialize in Bleed, Shock, Frost, Airborne, Burn, or another combat style.
