There are five distinct endings in Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake. Initially, only one ending is accessible during your first playthrough, but subsequent runs allow you to unlock alternate endings by equipping special charms before confronting the final boss.

Next, let’s dive into how to obtain each sparkly token and trigger these alternate endings through in-game side quests and critical decisions.

Crimson Butterfly is the straightforward ending you’ll receive on your first run. No special steps or equipment are needed—simply play through the story naturally. Upon clearing the game with this ending, your save data updates to include two new items: Yae’s shattered spirit stone and The Kusabi’s shattered spirit stone , which are vital for unlocking other endings.

Crimson Butterfly is the only ending that the player can obtain on a first playthrough, and is the ending that Fatal Frame 3 would later deem to the canonical one. Just play the game however you wish and you’ll get this ending. The only important thing to note is that after you save clear data with this ending obtained you’ll start your next playthrough with two new items in your inventory: Yae’s shattered spriit stone and the Kusabi’s shattered spirit stone.

The Promise was originally an Xbox-exclusive ending but returns here with altered requirements. To unlock it you need to: Finish Yae Kurosawa’s Side Story , which only appears on New Game+. Defeat the Kusabi in the final room while equipped with Yae’s Sparkling Spirit Stone .

The Promise ending, which originally debuted in the Xbox version of Fatal Frame 2, makes a return in this version of the game. However, the requirements to unlock this ending have been changed in this version. In order to get this ending the player must complete the following tasks

  1. Complete Yae Kurosawa’s Side Story
  2. Defeat the Kusabi in the Ritual Room while having the Yae’s Sparkling Spirit Stone charm equipped.

You cannot access The Promise on your initial playthrough since Yae’s side tale only activates after clearing the game once and starting a New Game+.

During New Game+ on Chapter 7, you’ll be able to begin Yae’s side story by revisiting the Kurosawa House courtyard after escaping the Tachibana House with Mayu. After completing it, equip Yae’s sparkling stone before heading to the Ritual Hall.

With Yae’s charm on, the final boss room’s encounter changes, replacing the Kiryu Twins with a new specter. You’ll face Kusabi just as in the default ending, but achieving this triggers The Promise ending.

The Abyss is the last returning ending and challenges you similarly to The Promise, but with Kusabi’s side story: Complete The Kusabi’s Side Story . Equip The Kusabi’s Sparkling Spirit Stone .

The Abyss is the the third ending of the game and the last returning one from previous versions of the game. Like The Promise, the requirements to earn this ending have been changed in the remake. To get the The Abyss ending you must perform the following tasks during your playthrough

  1. Complete The Kusabi’s Side Story
  2. Equip Kusabi’s Sparkling Spirit Stone before entering the Ritual Area in the final chapter

This quest starts from Chapter 4 in New Game+ after getting the Crimson Butterfly ending. You’ll explore underground to collect journals left by the Folklorist, unlocking Kusabi’s story and his spirit stone.

Return to the Ritual Hall with Kusabi’s charm. The boss fight gains a brutal second phase featuring new attacks and health regeneration, significantly intensifying the final battle.

Once you overcome Kusabi, you face an unexpected ghost boss absent from your original run. This fight is tough but brief and delivers one of the most emotionally complex endings in the game.

Sprouting Wings is exclusive to this Remake and requires you to have beaten both The Abyss and The Promise endings. You also need to complete side quests for Mayu Amakura and Sae Kurosawa . Finish The Abyss and The Promise endings. Complete both Sae’s side stories and Mayu’s side story. Equip Mayu’s and Sae’s Sparkling Spirit Stones before entering the Ritual Hall.

The Sprouting Wings ending is the first of two endings that is exclusive to this Remake. It can only be obtained after you have gotten both The Abyss and The Promise, as well as completed the Side Stories for Mayu Amakura and Sae Kurosawa. The requirements to get the ending as as follows:

  1. Obtain the The Abyss and The Promise endings
  2. Complete both of Sae’s Side Stories and Mayu Amakura‘s Side Story
  3. Equip Mayu’s Sparkling Spirit Stone and Sae’s Sparkling Spirit Stone before walking into the Ritual Room where you fight The Kusabi

Sae’s second side story becomes available in the final chapter after completing her initial side quest, while Mayu’s initiates after escaping the Tachibana House in Chapter 8.

Be mindful you have limited time for Mayu’s side story before you get separated from her entering The Old Tree, so it’s wise to head straight to The Heavenly Bridge when Chapter 8 starts.

Upon finishing these side quests, you’ll receive Mayu’s and Sae’s Sparkling Spirit Stones. Equipping them triggers their specters’ appearance in the Ritual Hall. This leads to a challenging fight: Kusabi’s two-phase battle followed by Sae as the true final boss. Defeating Sae and grabbing Mayu’s hand concludes the ending.

You’ll know you’ve activated the ending if Mayu’s specter appears in the Ritual Room. Just like in The Abyss ending you’ll have to face off against two phases in the Kusabi fight and fight Sae as the true final boss. After defeating Sae you’ll need to grab onto Mayu’s hand to get the ending.

The Remaining Sun is the hardest ending to unlock, requiring Nightmare Mode and completion of every side story including Mio Amakura’s. Achieve every other ending first. Start a New Game+ on Nightmare Mode. Complete all side stories. Complete Mio’s side story. Equip Mio’s Sparkling Spirit Stone before the final fight. Defeat Sae in under one minute.

The final ending in the game is also by far the hardest on to get as it can only be obtained in Nightmare Mode and complete Mio’s Side Story, which in of itself is very hard to unlock. To get this ending you must

  1. Get every other ending in the game
  2. Start a New Game+ in Nightmare Mode
  3. Complete every Side Story in the game
  4. Complete Mio Amakura’s Side Story
  5. Equip Mio’s Sparkling Spirit Stone before facing The Kusabi
  6. Defeat Sae in under a minute

Mio’s side story only unlocks once all others are done within the same save file, making Nightmare Mode critical. You’ll need to conserve photo film and healing items carefully since resources are scarce on this difficulty.

After unlocking her quest, visit Misono Hill’s village entrance—where Sae and Yae’s side stories began—to meet Mio’s specter and gain her Sparkling Spirit Stone, setting the stage for this daunting final ending.
