Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake expands the story with 16 side tales, but one that stands out is the Masumi Makimura Side Story. This quest not only builds on the original Bloody Ring sidequest but introduces new cutscenes, deepening the narrative. Encountering Masumi’s ghost and unraveling his mystery adds a rich, haunting layer to the game’s chilling atmosphere.
Masumi Makimura Side Story Walkthrough
The moment you’re done with Miyako’s Side Story and try to leave Osaka House, Masumi appears as a faint specter in the doorway. Photographing him adds to your Ghost List, and a notebook he leaves behind reveals you must track him to four separate spots around the village.
Your first stop is just right of Osaka House, near the Trapped Boy’s residence. Here, you’ll find Masumi’s ghost waiting to be photographed, along with another notebook. Each location follows this pattern—find the specter, snap the photo, grab the journal.
Next, head back up Misono Hill to the very spot Miyako was during her story. Masumi will be standing there, and his new journal awaits you nearby. This location tests your patience, especially if you’re juggling multiple side quests in the village’s eerie environment.
The third encounter puts Masumi’s ghost next to a carved stone of twins at a fork on the village’s west side. Capturing him here completes another crucial segment, with a fresh notebook added to your inventory.
The final ghost is found in front of Kureha Shrine. Photograph him one last time and pick up the last journal to wrap up this phase of the quest. After this, progression halts until Chapter 3, adding a suspenseful pause to your journey.
Midway through Chapter 3, during exploration of Kurosawa House, you’ll discover the Radiant Lens. This vital item enables you to bypass bloody barriers like sealed doors and crates. With it, investigate the Main Hall’s left wall to reveal a secret door.
Inside this hidden room, equip the Exposure Lens to reveal an invisible Masumi ghost. Photograph him to collect another journal and a Bloody Ring. While the ring can’t be used just yet, it’s essential to hold on to it for upcoming events in Chapter 4.
Upon escaping Kurosawa House in Chapter 4, return to the back room of Osaka House where Miyako’s battle took place. Because you have the Bloody Ring, both Masumi and Miyako’s ghosts will confront you simultaneously. While individually manageable, dealing with two specters in this cramped space demands precision and cool nerves.
Defeating both spirits grants you a Sard to activate the Ghost Radio. This lets you hear Masumi’s final moments, bringing emotional closure and fully completing his haunting side story.
