In the atmospheric world of Mina the Hollower, Bones are the currency and key resource you’ll constantly crave. They fuel everything from merchant purchases to powerful, permanent stat upgrades known as Bone Ups. But with Bones lost upon death, acquiring and safeguarding them becomes an essential — and sometimes nerve-wracking — part of progressing through the game.

This guide explains the fastest method for obtaining Bones in the early game, identifies the best trinkets for boosting Bone income, explains how Bonestones function, and tells you which Bone Up upgrades you should pick first.

Bones primarily serve two functions: purchasing items from merchants and unlocking Bone Up upgrades that permanently boost Mina’s stats. Once you gather enough Bones, the game prompts you to spend them either on these upgrades or to convert them into Bonestones , which can be saved for later use.

The main roles of bones are:

  • Purchase items from merchants.
  • Trigger Bone Up (level up) upgrades that permanently enhance Mina’s stats.

When you have collected enough Bones, the game will automatically offer you the option to Bone Up. At that point, you can spend your Bones on a stat upgrade or convert them into a Bonestone for later use.

Bones are so valuable that having a reliable farming method can make the rest of the adventure much easier.

While exploring naturally yields some Bones, focusing on efficient farming strategies early on will make your journey noticeably smoother. Without a steady Bone income, progress feels grindy and risky because unspent Bones vanish upon death.

You will naturally come across bones when exploring, but there are many more rewarding methods of obtaining them.

Defeating enemies is the most straightforward Bone source, but not all foes are equal in value. Minor enemies like bats drop minimal Bones, whereas tougher adversaries such as armored knights and big frogs reward you with significantly more.

When you defeat enemies, each one drops Bones.

The number of bones you receive will vary according to the enemy.

  • Small enemies like bats give you only a few Bones.
  • Enemies who are more powerful, for example armoured knights and big frogs, drop a lot of bones.

When you want to farm bones as quickly as possible, you should always choose tougher enemies over weaker ones.

For efficient farming, prioritize engaging stronger enemies rather than weaker ones. This ensures the time and effort spent yield the highest Bone return.

Bones are also hidden throughout the world, often tucked away in destructible objects. Don’t overlook:

  • Bone fragments scattered on the ground
  • Half-buried Bone piles
  • Treasure chests
  • Breakable crates
  • Boulders that shatter to reveal Bones
  • Secrets discovered while burrowing

Destroying everything in your path adds up to a substantial Bone haul over time, so adopt a thorough exploration habit.

Keep an eye out for:

  • Bone fragments lying on the ground
  • Half-buried Bone piles
  • Treasure chests
  • Breakable crates
  • Destructible boulders containing Bones
  • Hidden collectibles while burrowing

Many players simply run past these objects, but destroying everything along your path adds up to a large amount of extra Bones over time.

Use Gameplay Modifiers (Optional)

If achievements aren’t a priority, activating gameplay modifiers can significantly speed up Bone farming. Notable options include Boning Up 20% Faster and No Bone Loss on Death. These settings fast-track progress but disable achievement unlocking.

Some of the most useful options include:

  • Boning Up 20% Faster
  • No Bone Loss on Death

These modifiers speed up progression a lot, but remember that turning them on disables in-game achievements.

Best Early-Game Bone Farming Route

One of the premier early-game farming routes is at Mourner’s Mile: Knight’s Rest, east of Ossex. This area features several armored knights, Bone-laden boulders, and easily accessed Underlab entrances that serve as quick reset points.

This route is fast, offering valuable enemies, bone-filled boulders, and Underlab entrances nearby, resetting the area right away.

How to Reach Knight’s Rest

  1. Traverse the Eastern Heath.
  2. Approach the zone with armored knights.
  3. Locate the graveyard with the headless statue.
  4. Head north to find the Underlab entrance.

With two entrances leading into the Underlab, this locale offers a fast loop for farming Bones repeatedly without long waits.

Actually there are two entrances to the Underlab in the area, which is why this place is one of the most convenient farming locations at the beginning of the game.

Fast Bone Farming Method

  1. Exit the Underlab.
  2. Break the three Bone-filled boulders nearby.
  3. Defeat the surrounding armored knights.
  4. Clear any additional Bone-containing rocks.
  5. Return to the Underlab entrance to reset the area.
  6. Repeat this cycle continuously.

Since entering and leaving the Underlab respawns enemies and collectibles, this efficient loop ensures steady Bone accumulation.

  1. Leave the Underlab.
  2. Destroy the three Bone-filled boulders nearby.
  3. Defeat the nearby armored knight.
  4. Continue south to eliminate another knight.
  5. Break any additional Bone-containing rocks.
  6. Return to the Underlab.
  7. Exit again to respawn enemies and collectibles.
  8. Repeat the process.

Since entering and leaving the Underlab causes the overworld enemies and collectible objects to be refreshed, you can repeat this route as often as you like.

Longer Farming Route

For players with a bit more time, extending the route toward Queensbury Crypt offers larger Bone hauls. Clearing enemies and Bone deposits along this stretch before returning through the Underlab ups your gains per cycle, albeit at the cost of longer runs.

Once you have cleared the enemies and the bone deposits along the path, go through the Underlab entrance and then retrac your steps.

Even though each run takes more time, you will gain more Bones per cycle.

Best Trinkets for Farming Bones

Boost your Bone farming effectiveness by equipping the right trinkets. The two prime choices are:

  • Deboning Wand – Increases Bones dropped by around 50%, though the extra Bones scatter onto the ground.
  • Stolenoid – Automatically attracts nearby pickups, including Bones, making collection effortless.

You get even better results if you use them together.

Deboning Wand

The Deboning Wand increases the number of Bones dropped by defeated enemies by roughly 50%.

The only disadvantage is that the additional Bones end up scattered on the ground rather than being stored directly in your inventory.

This becomes a problem if enemies die near pits, since some Bones may fall where you can’t collect them.

The good news is that the Knight’s Rest farming route is extremely safe and has very few hazards, which is why it is one of the safest places to equip this trinket.

Stolenoid

The Stolenoid automatically attracts nearby pickups, including Bones.

As long as you are nearby, the Bone drops will quickly move towards Mina rather than having them gathered manually.

This trinket almost completely makes up for the downside of the Deboning Wand.

Best Trinket Combination

Using the Deboning Wand together with the Stolenoid mitigates their individual downsides and forms a powerful combo. The Wand boosts Bone drops, while the Stolenoid ensures none of the spilled Bones get left behind.

  • Deboning Wand
  • Stolenoid

The first increases Bone drops, while the second makes collecting those extra Bones much easier.

Together, they create one of the most efficient Bone farming setups available.

Best Bone Up Upgrade Priority

When you accumulate enough Bones, a Bone Up occurs automatically. Choosing which upgrade path to prioritize depends on your playstyle and current needs.

The best upgrade for you depends on how you like to play.

Defense First

If you’re still acclimating to enemy patterns or frequently taking damage, investing in defensive stats first is wise. Higher defense extends survivability and helps preserve your collected Bones.

The less damage you take, the longer you’ll survive and the more of your hard-earned Bones you’ll retain.

Increase Attack Power

Players favoring aggressive combat might opt to increase attack power, enabling swifter kills and faster farming runs. Alternatively, boosting Shortarm damage benefits those relying heavily on those abilities during fights.

Causing more damage allows you to kill enemies more quickly, which in turn speeds up farming and results in shorter difficult boss fights.

Upgrade Shortarm Damage

Players who use Shortarm abilities frequently may want to boost that category instead.

This upgrade is worth it if a lot of your combat revolves around those abilities.

Bone Up Can Save You During Tough Battles

The Bone Up mechanic also briefly refills all your Health, Joules, and Sparks. Timing a Bone Up during a boss fight or tough encounter can be a clutch survival tactic and shift the battle in your favor.

It might be a good idea if you’re about to level up during a difficult boss battle. You can save up enough Bones to use them for the Bone Up action at the right moment.

The full restoration can completely change the outcome of an encounter.

Should You Choose a Bonestone Instead?

Instead of spending Bones immediately, you can convert a Bone Up into a Bonestone, which safely stores Bones and prevents losing them upon death. Bonestones can be accessed anytime from the Bone-Former located in the upper-right of the Underlab.

Instead of selecting a stat upgrade, you can convert that Bone Up into a Bonestone.

Doing this safely stores your accumulated Bones instead of spending them.

Since Bonestones can’t be lost in the same way as ordinary carried Bones, they are an excellent method of protecting valuable resources.

You’ll be able to get them from the Bone-Former in the upper-right part of the Underlab at any time when you’re ready to use them.

When to Store Bones as Bonestones

  • Store Bones when carrying large amounts.
  • Prepare to enter dangerous new zones.
  • Save for costly merchant purchases.
  • Plan for consecutive Bone Up upgrades later on.

Holding Bones as Bonestones reduces the risk of losing progress and helps you strategize your upgrades more effectively.

  • You’re carrying a large number of Bones.
  • You’re about to explore a dangerous new area.
  • You’re saving for an expensive merchant item.
  • You want several Bone Up upgrades in quick succession later.

This method lowers the chance of having to start from scratch after an unexpected death.

To maximize Mina’s strength early on, focus on the Knight’s Rest loop: eliminate armored knights, smash bone-laden boulders, and use the Underlab entrances to reset the area swiftly. Coupled with the best trinkets, this routine forms the backbone of efficient Bone farming in Mina the Hollower.
