Stupid Never Dies drops players into the shoes of Davy, a young zombie navigating a sprawling dungeon filled with dangerous foes and unique powers to absorb. This game’s blend of action-packed combat and strategic transformation makes every run feel fresh, challenging, and relevant for fans craving dynamic roguelikes right now.

Stylish Action

At face value, the combat in Stupid Never Dies might remind you of a straightforward action game. Davy’s repertoire includes basic light and heavy attacks, along with special moves tied to equipped items. Though his attacks have a deliberate pace, their impact is strong, especially against foes at or near his level.

The true standout is the Style Eat mechanic. When you defeat certain non-fodder enemies, you absorb their style and can instantly transform by pressing the left or right D-Pad buttons, bringing a new layer of combat variety.

This means you might suddenly become a massive colossus with powerful, slow, knockback-heavy attacks, or an ice fairy with rapid strikes that slowly freeze enemies in place. Each transformation feels distinct and changes how you approach combat on the fly.

Every absorbed style also grants passive buffs and unique abilities, so even if you don’t immediately transform, collecting styles is crucial for increasing your overall combat power.

How strong each style is depends on the enemy from which you absorb it. Sometimes you’ll pick up a weak werewolf style with simple attacks and minimal buffs, but on rarer occasions, you might grab a powerful version capable of clearing clusters of enemies in seconds.

There’s a catch: every style only lasts for three dungeon floors, encouraging constant experimentation and relentless combat. This limited duration keeps the pacing tight and lets you regularly experience new moves and tactics.

This time constraint actually encourages more aggressive play. After clearing a floor, you can either proceed to a slightly tougher adjacent floor or jump multiple levels down for a boss battle. When you have powerful styles, taking the riskier, deeper dive can save time and ramp up your run’s intensity.

When feeling less equipped, sticking to floors of the same difficulty helps you play it safe. But get a hold of a strong style like the harpy’s ranged power, and pushing deep to face a challenging boss becomes thrilling and rewarding.

A Roguelike To Die For

The big difference that makes Stupid Never Dies stand out is how it handles roguelike progression alongside its combat. The pressure to move fast is built into every run, thanks to a strict timer that’s always ticking down.

Whenever you enter the dungeon, the clock is running. If you stall or linger too long, a damage-over-time effect kicks in, rapidly draining your health and leading to an abrupt death. This feature means you can’t just methodically clear every enemy — speed is essential.

Thankfully, there are ways to extend your timer. Every ten floors completed grants you an extra three minutes, which nudges you toward skipping floors to keep your pace brisk. Mini chests on each floor sometimes award even more time, giving you strategic breathing room.

Running out of time rarely feels frustrating if you stay focused. The looming timer adds a constant sense of urgency that makes each floor’s combat and decision-making feel vital. You have to weigh if earning extra EXP by fighting every enemy is worth the clock.

The temptation to gather EXP is strong since leveling up on runs improves your current capabilities and these upgrades carry over into future runs, making you progressively stronger. This keeps each death from feeling like a failure and instead an opportunity for growth.

Each run’s earned EXP boosts future attempts, so enemies that once gave minimal experience rapidly level up your progression in subsequent runs. That means even early failures can quickly turn into empowered comebacks as you become a more formidable Davy.

After every couple of level-ups, you choose from three upgrades that can range from passive damage buffs against bosses to swapping out your zombie form’s active skills for something entirely new. This choice keeps runs feeling personalized and impactful.

Despite a personal hesitation toward roguelikes due to their reliance on randomness, Stupid Never Dies sidesteps some common frustrations with its upgrade pacing. Starting runs with several upgrades early on gives clarity on how to approach a run and reduces the usual uncertain slog until power spikes.

This early burst of power and tactical choice transforms the experience. You don’t feel trapped by luck, but instead empowered to make meaningful decisions and embrace the chaotic fun of this zombie dungeon crawler.

While roguelikes often hinge on luck and unpredictable outcomes, the game’s design rewards aggressive progression and frequent style changes, making every run feel fresh and fair rather than frustrating and random.

Faster leveling leads to more meaningful upgrades early, which means you can immediately see an advantage or new tactic rather than hoping RNG doesn’t ruin your progress. This is a clever design choice that works in favor of players seeking consistent growth.

Ultimately, this approach encourages players to experiment fearlessly while understanding how their choices shape the journey. It’s one of the most invigorating takes on roguelike progression we’ve seen recently.

Bizarre Pacing

However, the initial hours aren’t without fault. The early pacing can feel slow and repetitive, making the climb to the meat of the game a bit tedious. This setup might test some players’ patience before the gameplay loops truly click and the fun really begins.
