Lead is one of those resources in Subnautica 2 that suddenly becomes extremely important the moment you start progressing into better equipment and deeper exploration. At first, you barely think about it, and then out of nowhere multiple crafting recipes start demanding Lead at the same time.

That is usually when the frustration begins.

Many Lead deposits are hidden deeper underwater or inside dangerous regions, which makes early farming feel intimidating for newer players. Thankfully, there is actually a pretty safe farming route that gives you access to a large amount of Lead without forcing you into extremely dangerous territory.

Even better, the area is only around 60 meters deep, which makes it manageable much earlier than some of the deeper alternatives players often recommend.

If you are trying to stockpile Lead for upgrades, vehicles, or advanced crafting, this is honestly one of the better beginner-friendly locations to farm.

What Lead Is Used For

Before heading out, it helps to understand why Lead matters so much.

Lead starts becoming important once you move beyond the very early survival stage of the game. It is commonly used for:

  • Advanced crafting recipes
  • Vehicle upgrades
  • Equipment progression
  • Base systems
  • Sonic Resonator crafting

Once you begin unlocking better technology, you can burn through your Lead supply surprisingly fast.

That is why finding a reliable farming location early saves a lot of future headaches.

Recommended Equipment Before Going

Technically, you can reach this location fairly early, but bringing a few useful tools makes the trip much smoother.

I strongly recommend having:

  • Standard Air Tank
  • Air Bladder
  • Scanner
  • Distraction Flares if possible

The Standard Air Tank helps enormously because even though the area is not extremely deep, you still want enough oxygen to comfortably search the chasm without constantly panicking.

The Air Bladder is useful for emergency ascents back to the surface.

And the Distraction Flares are incredibly helpful against the small hostile creatures in the area.

If you already unlocked the Sonic Resonator, definitely bring it as well because there are larger Lead deposits nearby that can only be broken with advanced mining tools.

Where to Find Lead

Start from your Lifepod and face roughly northeast at around 70 degrees on your compass.

From there, begin swimming outward approximately 300 to 310 meters.

The route itself is surprisingly manageable compared to many other mid-game resource areas. You may pass through some darker water sections that look intimidating, but the overall path is fairly safe if you stay aware of your surroundings.

Along the way, you may encounter Armors swimming around the area.

Thankfully, these creatures are mostly harmless if you keep your distance. As long as you do not swim directly into them or provoke them unnecessarily, they usually leave you alone.

The Rock Formation Landmark

As you approach roughly 220 meters away from the Lifepod, start looking carefully ahead.

You should eventually spot a distinctive rock formation with wreckage nearby.

This formation is the major landmark you are looking for.

If visibility is poor, gaining a little elevation in the water can help you spot it more easily. Using the Air Bladder briefly for a higher view actually works surprisingly well here.

Once you identify the formation, swim toward the right-hand side of it.

This is where the Lead farming area begins.

The Lead Chasm

After reaching the formation, descend down into the nearby chasm area.

This is where the real farming starts.

Lead deposits are scattered throughout the walls and floor of the chasm, and honestly there is a pretty generous amount concentrated in the area. Compared to randomly searching caves across the map, this spot feels much more reliable and efficient.

You will find:

  • Small Lead nodes
  • Medium Lead deposits
  • Potential large deposits if you have advanced tools

If you already crafted the Sonic Resonator, this location becomes even better because you can break apart the larger resource nodes for significantly bigger rewards.

Watch Out for Nibblers

The main annoyance in this area comes from creatures called Nibblers.

Thankfully, they are more irritating than truly dangerous.

Still, they can absolutely disrupt your farming if you ignore them completely.

This is why bringing Distraction Flares is such a good idea.

If the Nibblers start harassing you, throw a flare away from your position and they will usually chase after it instead, giving you enough time to continue mining safely.

Honestly, flares make this farming route dramatically less stressful.

Why This Is One of the Best Early Lead Spots

What makes this location so useful is the balance between safety, depth, and resource density.

A lot of richer Lead zones are located much deeper or inside genuinely dangerous biomes filled with aggressive predators. This area avoids most of those problems while still giving you a large amount of material.

For early and mid-game players, that balance is incredibly valuable.

You can gather a substantial amount of Lead without needing endgame equipment or risking constant death.

Tips for Farming Efficiently

Farm During Daylight

Visibility helps a lot in this region.

At night, the chasm becomes much harder to navigate and spotting deposits takes longer.

Bring Extra Inventory Space

Lead stacks up quickly once you find a good farming route.

Portable Lockers or upgraded inventory space help a lot during longer mining runs.

Use the Sonic Resonator if Available

Large deposits provide significantly more materials and make each trip much more efficient.

Keep an Eye on Oxygen

Even though the area is not extremely deep, it is easy to lose track of oxygen while mining multiple deposits back-to-back.

Do not get greedy

Lead can feel oddly difficult to find when you first start needing it in larger amounts, especially because many random deposits are scattered awkwardly around the map. Thankfully, this northeast chasm route gives players a much safer and more reliable alternative compared to some of the deeper, more dangerous farming spots.

Once you learn the route and recognize the rock formation landmark, gathering Lead becomes far less frustrating.

And honestly, after spending hours desperately searching random cave walls for a single piece of Lead, finally discovering an area packed with deposits feels incredibly satisfying.
