  • United Penguin Kingdom

United Penguin Kingdom greets players with a surprisingly charming premise: penguins battling global warming with high-tech coolers. The game’s blend of lighthearted humor and adorable character design draws you in, even as the challenges become more serious and the comedy fades. Watching these little penguins scurry about their icy city adds a uniquely endearing touch to the city-building experience.

This isn’t just any city builder; United Penguin Kingdom demands patience and strategic planning. Early hours involve meticulous observation of the penguins’ daily routines while waiting for the slow-paced Reputation system to unlock new city levels. Resources, especially key ones like stone, are scarce and require careful management or reliance on occasional traders, which can make progression feel frustratingly stagnant.

Graphics – 8/10

The visual charm of United Penguin Kingdom lies chiefly in its lovable penguin designs and unique buildings. While the city aesthetics and character animations are delightful and worth the praise, the user interface feels outdated, evoking the feel of a 2000s MMO. City logos and interface fonts appear clunky and sometimes detract from the game’s otherwise polished look.

Zooming in on the city is always satisfying, as you follow penguins busily moving from place to place. Buildings are creatively themed; for example, the school is a giant igloo adorned with enormous bent pencils, topped by an entrance resembling a hat plastered with a nonsensical math equation. These quirky details inject a lot of personality into the cityscape.

Unfortunately, the UI font feels messy and inconsistently stylized, which can cause mild irritation during extended play sessions. Though the city visuals are strong, this mismatch affects immersion slightly, making menus less enjoyable to navigate.

Gameplay – 7/10

Players start by placing essential buildings on a grid, where efficiency matters to maximize the city’s Happiness stats. The grid system isn’t restrictive but adds a layer of spatial strategy to the construction process.

Living near water introduces constant threats like orca attacks targeting waterfront buildings, and seals frequently try to pilfer food from storage. The game flirts with tower defense elements—building a handful of defense towers can neutralize these pests easily, but their intermittent assaults add tension and keep you invested in protecting your city.

The kingdom consists of multiple cities that you can conquer using Reputation points earned through growth and tasks. However, Reputation gains can be volatile, fluctuating drastically within short periods, which can disrupt steady progress and planning.

Mid-game shortages, especially of stone which cannot be produced until reaching the Province status, hinder expansion. Since achieving Province status takes several years in-game, players spend much time waiting for rare traders, who come only occasionally, to restock these crucial materials. This leads to noticeable downtime where growth halts.

Once you grasp the gameplay mechanics and identify the best buildings for your strategy, city-building becomes a relaxing and satisfying loop. However, the initial hurdles can feel more punishing than rewarding, which might turn off some players early on.

City Building – 8/10

The game’s maps offer glacier islands where you can freely build, constrained only by unlocked technologies. Watching the city evolve visually with each new building type gives a strong sense of creating a living, breathing habitat.

One frustration is the inability to upgrade existing buildings directly. Evolving a building requires demolishing the current structure and replacing it with the newer version, which occupies the same space. This mechanic becomes tedious, especially when you need to frequently update your city with better technologies.

Managing labor is straightforward, thanks to an intuitive side menu showing job vacancies and unemployed penguins. The game even lets you send uneducated penguins away for money or Reputation, a clever way to keep your workforce balanced without micromanagement.

Progression – 6/10

Progression is a sticking point, feeling artificially slowed due to the rank-based city levels locked behind the Reputation system. Players often find themselves confined to outdated buildings with poor resource access for long stretches, dragging down motivation.

If the city’s rank could update more dynamically instead of annually, progression would likely feel less stagnant and make for a more engaging experience overall.

Advancing involves researching new buildings, constructing them, and then grinding Reputation to unlock higher city tiers. This tried-and-true cycle feels familiar but also introduces slow pacing that not everyone will enjoy.

Performance –10/10

Performance on a mid-range PC was flawless, with smooth 60 frames per second on ultra settings throughout. No bugs arose, even after many hours, and animations like penguins ice skating or fishing run without glitches, reinforcing immersion in this chilly world.

Enjoyment – 9/10

Despite some slowdowns and UI quirks, United Penguin Kingdom remains a joy thanks to its cute penguins and humorous touches. Watching these little creatures hustle while defending against pesky seals adds charm and lighthearted strategy. Those who enjoy patient city builders will find satisfaction in finally unlocking those key tech upgrades.
