Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag stands out as one of the series’ most cherished entries, loved for its pirate adventure and open-world freedom. Its remake, Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, arrives with high expectations, aiming to enhance the experience for both new players and returning fans.

The game has been rebuilt from scratch using Ubisoft’s latest Anvil engine, which immediately elevates its presentation. The vibrant landscapes of locations like Havana now pop with richer colors and superior lighting effects that make the world feel more alive and immersive.

Edward Kenway’s character benefits immensely from fresh animations crafted specifically for him, giving him a unique presence that was absent in the original. This tailored animation injects personality into his movements, making his interactions and combat flow feel distinct and engaging.

Combat Enhancements Bring Depth and Style

The combat system goes beyond a mere visual facelift. While the core counter-kill mechanic remains, Resynced introduces new finishers and combos, creating a more dynamic and rewarding battle experience. You can no longer chain together kills on certain enemies as before, which ups the challenge and demands greater tactical play.

This revamped combat is easily the most refined in the series in years. It takes a moment to master, but once you do, it adds a satisfying flashiness to fights that breathes fresh life into the familiar mechanics.

Performance-wise, the game runs impressively smooth on PC, pushing up to 90 FPS on high settings with DLSS enabled, while still maintaining solid numbers even at 4K. Console players on PS5, PS5 Pro, and Xbox Series S will also enjoy stable frame rates, especially during the chaotic naval battles where performance really counts.

Speaking of naval combat, the core experience remains largely unchanged for good reason — it was never in need of fixing. Sailing feels just as thrilling as before, and the addition of more sea shanties with user-selectable options adds to the ambiance, deepening immersion during your voyages.

Areas That Could Use Improvement

Despite the many upgrades, the remake does stumble on a few fronts. The price tag of $59.99 combined with the inclusion of microtransactions for cosmetic items and time-saving resource packs feels out of place for a remake of a 13-year-old game.

Thankfully, these microtransactions don’t impede story progress, but their presence casts a shadow over the experience. For example, spending an additional $4.99 for a resource pack after purchasing the full game can be frustrating for players wanting a complete package upfront.

Combat variety also took a step back. Unlike the original, where you could wield enemy weapons like muskets and axes or even brandish the hidden blade in fights, Resynced focuses almost solely on sword combat, with only limited fistfights. This reduction in weapon options might disappoint players who valued that diversity.

Furthermore, the modern-day storyline segment from the original has been cut entirely. While some players might not miss it, removing this iconic part shifts the game’s tone and identity, making it feel less like a traditional Assassin’s Creed experience.

Minor bugs persist as well — occasional camera glitches during stealth kills and NPCs getting stuck in the environment. They’re not game-breaking, but they’re noticeable enough to warrant a few patches down the line.

Who Should Take the Plunge?

Players new to Black Flag will find Resynced a stellar starting point. It maintains the essence of what made the original legendary while delivering modern visuals and smoother gameplay quality-of-life updates, like improved tailing missions.

For veterans who have journeyed through Edward’s world before, the remake still offers a worthwhile revisit, especially if it’s been a while. However, considering the full retail price, waiting for a discount might be a smarter option unless you’re eager to dive in immediately.

Final Verdict

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced elevates one of the best pirate adventures with upgraded visuals and a refined combat system. Microtransactions and the hefty price make it a point of consideration, but the core game remains as captivating as ever. If you’re a fan willing to invest, it’s a rewarding experience; otherwise, keep an eye out for sales.

If you’ve never played the original Black Flag back in the day, this is a strong yes. It’s widely considered one of the best pirate games ever made and the remake keeps almost everything that made it special. You can now get better visuals and quality-of-life improvements like easier tailing missions, all without needing to know anything about the older Assassin’s Creed games.

If you’ve already played and loved the original, the answer is still mostly yes, especially if it’s been a while since you last played it. But you have to pay the full price. So I’d recommend waiting for a good deal and maybe work on your backlog a little.

All in all, the story is unchanged and much of what’s new is smaller side content rather than some reinvention. It’s a great game to revisit, but it may not feel like a must-play if you already know every corner of the map.

A Must-Play Remake or a ‘Wait for a Sale’?

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced takes one of the best games in its series and makes it look and feel better in ALMOST every way that matters. The microtransactions and the full price are fair points of frustration. But as a game, it delivers. If you like Assassin’s Creed, especially this one, and if you don’t mind paying the full price of $59.99, this is worth your time.
