The eerie atmosphere of the Kiryu House conceals many stories, but none quite as haunting as Akane Kiryu’s. Despite her brief role originally, the remake encourages players to dig deeper through Akane’s Side Story, offering a richer glimpse into the haunting that grips Fatal Frame 2. Encountering this hidden narrative changes the way you experience the tale — and missing it feels like leaving a ghost untold.
Akane Kiryu Side Story Walkthrough
Once you’ve completed the Tachibana House segment and reunited with Mayu, head back to the Projector Room in the Kiryu House. Equip the critical Exposure Lens on your Camera Obscura and focus it on the projector. Capturing this image reveals a Remnant of Akane. Be sure to pick up the journal that spawns after she disappears – this triggers the start of her Side Story.
Your next destination is the Twins’ Room, situated centrally within the Kiryu House. Here, another Remnant awaits—using your Exposure Lens again to photograph it will briefly summon a Specter of Akane herself. Quick reflexes are needed to snap her picture before she fades away.
After the apparition vanishes, a new journal will lie where the Remnant was. Reading this propels you into a battle against the familiar Dollmaker ghost from the earlier chapter. Defeating him is crucial, but expect a pause in Akane’s story progression until you reach the game’s final chapter.
In the last chapter, separated from Mayu, return once more to the Kiryu House and find yourself in the Dollmaker’s room. This is where the climax of the Side Story unfolds: capture photos of Akane’s specter, the doll, and the Dollmaker, then pick up the central journal. It’s immediately followed by your final confrontation with Akane herself.
Conquering Akane reveals a photo of a grave at Minakami Cemetery. While it doesn’t unlock new items or encounters now, this grave holds narrative weight, tying directly into Azami Kiryu’s Side Story that comes later.
