The Wakemaker is one of the best early quality-of-life tools in Subnautica 2 because it dramatically improves your swimming speed and makes exploration feel much smoother overall.

During the first few hours of the game, players spend a huge amount of time simply swimming between caves, wrecks, resource zones, and story objectives. Once you unlock the Wakemaker, traveling across the map becomes noticeably faster and far less tedious.
The best part is that unlocking it is actually pretty easy compared to many other tools in the game. All three blueprint fragments are located fairly close to the Lifepod, and the crafting materials are mostly beginner-friendly resources.
Here is the full breakdown on where to find every Wakemaker fragment and how to craft it afterward.
What Does the Wakemaker Do?
The Wakemaker is essentially a mobility tool designed to increase your swim speed.
It helps with:
- Faster exploration
- Quicker resource runs
- Easier cave navigation
- Safer escapes from dangerous creatures
- Reduced travel time between objectives
Honestly, once you start using it regularly, going back to normal swimming feels painfully slow.
It is one of those upgrades that immediately changes the pace of the game.
Wakemaker Blueprint Fragment #1 Location
| Detail | Information |
|---|---|
| Distance from Lifepod | ~95m |
| Direction | North-Northwest |
| Depth | ~18m |
The first Wakemaker fragment is located inside a broken metal container in the shallow waters biome.
To find it, start at your Lifepod and face between the 330 and 345 compass markers, placing you roughly North-Northwest.
Swim forward around 95 meters.
Once you arrive, look downward toward the seafloor. You should notice scattered metal salvage pieces and several damaged containers resting between coral formations.
One of the open containers contains the Wakemaker fragment.
Take your time checking carefully because the fragment can blend into the environment surprisingly well depending on lighting conditions.
The nearby orange coral formation is usually the easiest landmark to identify.
Wakemaker Blueprint Fragment #2 Location
| Detail | Information |
|---|---|
| Distance from Lifepod | ~125m |
| Direction | North |
| Depth | ~27m |
After finding the first fragment, face North toward the 60 marker on your HUD.
You should notice a small cave nearby containing scattered Alterra wreckage.
Swim inside and search around the interior carefully.
The second Wakemaker fragment is hidden inside another open metal box deeper within the cave area.
This section is slightly darker than the first fragment location, so a Flashlight can help if visibility is poor.
Also, watch your oxygen while searching. The cave is not extremely deep, but newer players often spend too long checking every corner and accidentally push their oxygen limit.
Wakemaker Blueprint Fragment #3 Location
| Detail | Information |
|---|---|
| Distance from Lifepod | ~122m |
| Direction | North-Northwest |
| Depth | ~53m |
The third and final fragment is located much deeper than the previous two.
Start by returning to the first Wakemaker fragment location.
From there, turn toward the 240 compass marker, near the South symbol on the HUD.
Swim forward roughly 20 meters until you spot a narrow crevice in the seafloor.
Dive into the crevice and continue swimming downward.
At the bottom, you will eventually discover another metal container containing the final Wakemaker fragment.
Because this area reaches over 50 meters deep, oxygen management becomes much more important here compared to the earlier locations.
If you do not yet have upgraded oxygen capacity, consider bringing extra oxygen supplies before attempting this dive.
How to Craft the Wakemaker
Once all three fragments are scanned, the Wakemaker blueprint unlocks permanently.
You can then craft it using any Fabricator.
Wakemaker Crafting Recipe
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Silver | x1 |
| Wiring Kit | x1 |
| Grease | x1 |
| Basic Battery | x1 |
Thankfully, none of these materials are especially difficult to obtain once you know where to look.
Where to Find Silver
Silver is commonly found inside cave systems located roughly 200 meters North of the Lifepod.
These caves are fairly easy to recognize because they glow with colorful luminescent flora and fauna.
One of the easiest ways to identify the correct cave entrances is by looking for Pent growths nearby. These small orange organisms commonly appear around the entrances.
Inside these caves, you can find Silver alongside other important mid-game resources.
Because Silver is also required for several electronics recipes, it is smart to collect extra whenever possible.
How to Make a Wiring Kit
The Wiring Kit itself requires:
| Item | Materials |
|---|---|
| Wiring Kit | Silver x1, Copper Wire x1 |
Copper Wire is crafted from Copper Ore.
Copper is extremely common in the early caves near the Lifepod, especially around areas containing Titanium and beginner resources.
You will likely already have enough Copper by the time you unlock the Wakemaker blueprint.
How to Make a Basic Battery
The Basic Battery recipe requires:
| Item | Materials |
|---|---|
| Basic Battery | Copper x1, Acidic Raion Pouch x1 |
Acidic Raion Pouches are purple brain-like organisms found growing near cave floors in the starting biome.
To harvest them, you need the Survival Multitool.
These resources are fairly common once you begin exploring underwater cave systems regularly.
How to Get Grease
Grease is one of the easier Wakemaker materials to collect.
Grease Recipe
| Item | Materials |
|---|---|
| Grease | Lucifer Rotsac x1 |
Lucifer Rotsacs grow on Cradle Shootroot plants.
You can usually start finding these plants around 70 meters East of the Lifepod.
The glowing bulbs are particularly easy to spot during nighttime because they emit noticeable light underwater.
Honestly, nighttime exploration is actually useful here for once because the glow makes these resources stand out immediately.
How to Recharge the Wakemaker
The Wakemaker uses Basic Batteries as its power source.
Every use slowly drains battery charge over time, so eventually you will need to reload it.
To recharge the Wakemaker:
- Carry a charged Basic Battery in your inventory.
- Press the reload hotkey (R on PC).
- Select the charged battery when prompted.
The Wakemaker automatically swaps batteries and places the depleted battery back into your inventory.
This system works similarly to battery-powered tools from previous Subnautica games.
How to Recharge Batteries
Depleted Basic Batteries can be recharged using a Battery Terminal.
This is a base module that becomes available after scanning its blueprint fragments.
Once built, the Battery Terminal allows you to continuously recycle depleted batteries instead of constantly crafting new ones.
Getting this setup early makes using tools like the Wakemaker far more convenient long-term.
