Stupid Never Dies drops players into a constantly shifting dungeon as Davy, a young zombie driven by love and hunger. What sets this action roguelike apart is its inventive combat and progression mechanics that keep players engaged in a frantic race through ever-challenging floors. The fusion of hammering foes and absorbing their powers creates a fresh twist that feels alive and urgent.

Stylish Action

At first glance, Stupid Never Dies feels like a straightforward action game where Davy swings between light and heavy attacks and unleashes special moves based on equipped items. While his swings aren’t lightning-fast, they pack impressive damage, especially against enemies around his level, making each hit feel consequential.

The heart of the combat lies in the Style Eat mechanic. When you defeat a non-fodder enemy, you can instantly absorb their style by pressing left or right on the D-Pad, transforming into their form with new abilities and stat buffs.

This transformation isn’t just visual flair; you might grow into a massive colossus dealing crushing blows with slow but powerful attacks, or become a nimble ice fairy whose quick strikes build a freeze meter that immobilizes foes for heavy damage setups.

Each style offers unique attacks and passives, so even if you don’t plan to switch forms immediately, it’s smart to consume as many enemies as possible to stack strength before your transformation window closes.

The effectiveness of a style depends entirely on the strength of the enemy you’ve absorbed. An encounter with a weak werewolf grants a baseline version with limited utility, while a powerful werewolf unlocks devastating area attacks that can clear groups effortlessly.

However, this power is fleeting. Style forms last only three dungeon floors before fading, encouraging a dynamic combat rhythm where you must constantly seek new forms and adapt to shifting advantages.

This time limit on styles doubles as a clever design to incentivize aggressive play. Once a floor is cleared, you can choose to advance by one level or drop several levels at a time, each deeper floor posing greater danger but granting quicker progress toward your goal.

Playing conservatively often means only moving to floors of similar level, but wielding a powerful style—like a ranged harpy—pushes you to leap ahead and test your mettle against tougher bosses, trading safety for faster completion.

A Roguelike To Die For

Beyond the combat, the roguelike progression in Stupid Never Dies is where the game truly shines by blending risk, reward, and growth into a satisfying loop. The ticking time limit constantly reminds you that hesitation is costly.

Each dungeon run grants just a few minutes to clear floors before you start taking lethal damage from the ticking clock. This forces a ruthless pace; lingering too long turns a promising run into a disaster.

Fortunately, stamina extends by three minutes every ten levels cleared, motivating you to skip floors when possible to hit these checkpoints swiftly. Reward chests on each floor often grant valuable bonuses, including extra time, balancing speed and exploration.

While running out of time feels punishing, it rarely happens with moderate pace—yet its ever-present threat adds tension and encourages speedy decisions about when to fight and when to move.

The temptation to kill every foe isn’t without purpose. Each enemy grants EXP that powers up Davy, making levels easier and future attempts stronger thanks to an intriguing persistent levelling system.

When you die, your run’s accumulated EXP is recorded and boosts the value of enemies in subsequent attempts. So, an enemy that once gave only 1 EXP might yield 100 EXP later, letting you power up much faster as you learn the game.

Since Davy is immortal, death isn’t punishment but progress. Even losing after investing time to reach a boss only fuels motivation to return stronger and equipped with more upgrades.

After every few levels, you select from three upgrades offering passive buffs like increased boss damage or active changes such as swapping out Davy’s skills, allowing you to tailor your build toward a preferred combat style.

Despite a lingering skepticism toward roguelikes’ randomness, Stupid Never Dies handles it cleverly. Because EXp boosts happen early and frequently, you quickly get a sense of your run’s potential rather than gambling on late-game RNG swings.

This early surge of power means you start runs with solid upgrades and a clearer strategy, sidestepping a common frustration where players feel powerless until much later.

Yes, the game does rely on the same random chance to complete runs that most other games in this genre do, but having it be tied to level-ups when one of the game’s largest mechanics is raising the speed at which you level up leads to an interesting scenario.

By frontloading power gains, the game skillfully removes the ‘dead run’ feeling so common in the genre, making each attempt feel meaningful and increasing player investment with every floor cleared.

Bizarre Pacing

That said, the early game pacing can feel sluggish. The first hours move slowly as you learn systems and power up before the gameplay truly clicks. This ramp-up phase demands patience but lays the groundwork for the fast-paced, stylish combat loop that follows.
