Immortality, superhuman strength, and flight—being a vampire in Vampires: Bloodlord Rising feels exhilarating. Beyond the usual undead perks, the game hands you the unique chance to build and personalize an imposing vampire castle, crafting your own gothic domain in the shadows.

In this world, you play as Dragos, an acolyte awakened centuries after your master’s destruction by the Inquisition. Your directive is clear: raze the ruins of your vampire lord’s castle and reconstruct a new kingdom around its mystical core. This sets the stage for one of the game’s standout features—deep, obsessive base building that quickly becomes the heart of your experience.

Base building here isn’t just a side task; it’s pure dopamine. The variety of customization is impressive, with dozens of wall types, floor patterns, and decorative elements at your disposal. You can transform your vampire stronghold into an architectural marvel, blending gothic arches and baroque details to shape your personal nocturnal fortress.

The attention to detail is compelling—I spent countless hours fine-tuning aspects like roof tile patterns, caught between traditional gothic sharpness and elegant baroque styling. This design paralysis can drag gameplay nights, but it’s a testament to how immersive the building mechanics become when you get invested.

Some early issues show through, like awkward gaps between floor tiles and wall types that refuse to perfectly match patterns, which is frustrating if you’re a design perfectionist. Yet, the developer’s responsiveness to bugs signals these kinks will likely be ironed out in time.

One personal gripe is the inability to actually sit on your ornate throne in the castle’s core. It feels like a missed opportunity to really inhabit the undead lord role, and I hope the developers add this interaction—it would deepen the immersion significantly.

Gathering resources is a breeze compared to typical base builders. Resource nodes shatter with a single hit, delivering vast quantities instantly. It’s a smart design that respects your time and keeps the focus on creativity rather than tedious grinding.

Vampire servants handle much of the resource gathering and crafting, automating the more mundane tasks. Once set up, this system frees you up for more enjoyable creative pursuits. However, two major automation limitations stood out.

First, crafting still requires manually withdrawing materials from the shared chest, adding unnecessary busywork when other games have long automated this process. Second, the lack of setting specific crafting quantities means servants can waste resources producing excessive items like armor, forcing you to micromanage constantly.

Addressing these flaws would elevate the building experience from very good to seamless and let you focus more on designing than resource management.

The medium-sized world is dense with collectibles like vampire tears, skill books, and armor pieces that reward exploration. These items boost abilities and stats, adding depth to your character’s progression and giving incentive to scour every corner.

Early exploration, limited by your ground-bound movement, drags a bit. But unlocking your first major power—transforming into a bat and gaining flight—is transformative. Suddenly, traversing the map becomes quick and fluid, letting you discover hidden areas while avoiding cumbersome Inquisition patrols.

The groundwork for engaging exploration is solid, but it lacks variety beyond the basic collectible types. More environmental storytelling, unique vampire locales, and lore-driven secrets could keep players invested longer.

The primary antagonists are the Inquisition, whose camps and raids introduce tension. They can trigger alarms and attack your strongholds, forcing you to defend your realm even as you build.

Combat, unfortunately, doesn’t meet the same standard. Basic attack options and a simple counter-dodge system belie serious issues. Without invincibility frames during dodges, players must maneuver precisely to avoid hits, but clunky controls often cause you to get stuck on enemies and take unnecessary damage.

After years of dodge mechanics perfected by other games, this feels like a step backward. Dodging into enemy models breaks fluidity and turns what should be dynamic encounters into frustrating chore-like fights.
