Kate Evans in Ace Combat 8 starts out as the cool-headed leader of Queen Flight, but she ends up becoming way more important to Rex and Joker Flight than her introduction lets on.

Does she survive Ace Combat 8? This and many other questions about her will be answered in this text. The game gives her a surprisingly big role alongside Rex after the war so she’s worth getting to know.

Spoiler Alert: This article contains major story and ending spoilers for Ace Combat 8.

Who Is Kate Evans in Ace Combat 8?

Katherine “Kate” Evans holds the rank of Lieutenant Commander in the Federation of Central Usea Navy and commands Queen Flight with the callsign Little Bee. Early in the story, she appears as the composed and skilled lead pilot who operates alongside Joker Flight from the Endurance aircraft carrier.

Bandai Namco’s official profile highlights Kate’s calm demeanor and excellent piloting skills. More importantly, she’s fiercely protective—not just of her own squadron but also of the pilots flying with Joker Flight. This protective instinct defines much of her character through the campaign.

The perpetual bandages she wears symbolize the brutal battles she’s endured. Rather than showing weakness, Kate hides her fears and physical toll, maintaining a positive front for those depending on her.

What Happens to Kate Evans?

Kate begins the Sotoa-Usea War as Queen 1, leading her squadron from the Endurance. But as the conflict rages on, Queen Flight suffers devastating losses, and Kate’s position shifts dramatically.

After losing her entire squadron, Kate moves closer to Joker Flight, forging a tighter connection with Rex and his fellow pilots. She temporarily fills the role of Joker 2 during critical operations, flying side by side with the story’s protagonist.

She temporarily takes Baxter’s position as Joker 2 while Baxter is occupied with the operation to disable a Tonitrus Spear. This is an important shift for Kate: she is no longer simply the commander of the Endurance’s second flight. She is now flying directly alongside the protagonist.

Does Kate Evans Die in Ace Combat 8?

The game teases her death but Kate Evans does not actually die. During the intense Operation Paint It Blue, she is shot down and presumed dead by those around her.

Her absence hits hard, especially since she’s already lost her squadron. This moment cements the brutal reality of war pressing down on even the strongest characters, making her potential loss feel very real.

How Does Kate Evans Survive?

How Does Kate Evans Survive?

After her crash, Kate is rescued by Savian mercenaries once their contracts with Sotoa expire, explaining her disappearance from FCU forces and why she cannot be immediately recovered.

Her dramatic return arrives during Operation Locust Purge alongside D.D.’s mercenary reinforcements. Seeing Kate survive and rejoin the fight is a satisfying payoff after players are led to believe otherwise.

Her comeback happens during Operation Locust Purge, when D.D.’s mercenary reinforcements enter the battle. Kate appears alongside them, revealing that she survived being shot down.

It is one of the better late-game payoffs for her character because the player has already been given enough time to accept that she may actually be gone.

Kate Evans Age in Ace Combat 8

Though her exact age isn’t stated, Kate’s rank and responsibilities suggest she’s a seasoned officer likely in her early to mid-thirties. Her experience commands respect and explains her composed but resilient nature.

What Happens to Kate and Rex After the War?

The game stops short of confirming a romantic relationship between Kate and Rex, focusing instead on their professional partnership after the war.

Post-conflict, Kate takes command of King Flight with Rex serving as her backseater on surveillance missions, continuing their strong professional bond built through wartime trials.

Kate now commands King Flight, while Rex willingly serves as her backseater during the surveillance mission.

Kate Evans Voice Actors in Ace Combat 8

Marcella Lentz-Pope lends her voice to Kate in English, capturing the balance between calm leadership and the underlying pressures the character endures.

Yūko Kaida provides the Japanese voice, adding nuance to Kate’s composed and determined persona.

Lentz-Pope’s performance fits the contrast built into Kate’s character: she needs to sound like a composed commanding officer even when the story makes it increasingly obvious how much pressure she is carrying.

Kate Evans’ Role Is Bigger Than It First Appears

Initially a supporting figure, Kate’s story expands into a key thread in ACE COMBAT 8’s narrative. Losing her squadron, joining Joker Flight, suffering and surviving a near-fatal crash, and reclaiming command post-war show her evolution from background player to central character.

This growth is why players end up more invested in her than her early screen time might suggest. Kate’s journey, especially surviving alongside Rex to the story’s conclusion, cements her as a core part of the experience rather than just a side character.

That also explains why players who finish the campaign are suddenly much more interested in her than her early-game screen time might suggest. Kate isn’t just the leader of “the other flight.” By the ending, she is one of the characters who actually makes it through the war with Rex and one of the people still beside him after the Wings of Theve story is effectively over.
