Upgrading is free of risk until +4 and gets expensive fast after it: a failed attempt keeps the item's level but eats the gold and ore, and the +10 step succeeds one time in ten.
Success chances
Upgrade success rates are tied exclusively to the target rank: +1 100%, +2 100%, +3 100%, +4 100%, +5 75%, +6 50%, +7 40%, +8 30%, +9 20%, +10 10%, +11 100%, and +12 100%. An unsuccessful roll never downgrades or destroys the item, meaning bad luck simply demands another attempt at the standard cost.
What it costs
Attempting an upgrade to +n costs item level × 4 × n² in gold (doubled if the piece is ancient), alongside the rarity's base material recipe multiplied by n². Common and uncommon gear consumes solely Iron Ore, while legendary items call for Iron Ore, Gold Ore, and Earth Essence in a 3 : 2 : 1 proportion. Furthermore, rare, legendary, and divine pieces require a slot-matching boss drop on their +9 and +10 attempts, such as a Tidewrath Pincer for weapons or Cinderlord Horns for helms.
Enhancing an item level 700 legendary weapon to +4 has a 100% success rate and runs 84,000 gold. Progressing from +4 to +8 averages roughly 1,235,267 gold, whereas +8 to +10 averages around 3,934,000 gold due to success rates dropping to 20% and 10% (requiring five and ten attempts on average). Consequently, the final two upgrade tiers account for roughly 75% of the total gold needed to reach +10.
The +11 and +12 upgrade tiers succeed without fail, though they require specific materials regardless of the item: 2,000,000 gold plus 1 Consecration Stone for +11, followed by 4,000,000 gold and 2 Consecration Stones for +12. Consecration Stone drops exclusively from Mythic Rift bosses.
What an upgrade gives
Enhancement ranks up to +10 boost rolled values by 5%, targeting one stat per level on common/uncommon pieces and two on rare or higher tiers, rotating cyclically through the item's modifier list. Implicits are prioritized first—raising weapon damage and speed before moving down through affixes in the order they were generated. Levels +11 and +12 then grant a flat 5% increase to all stats simultaneously. Because a legendary weapon holds seven modifiers (damage, speed, four primary affixes, and a secondary), achieving +12 results in a 25% increase across 6 modifiers and a 20% gain on the secondary.
This makes early enhancements exceptionally efficient: the initial upgrade on a rare or better weapon raises both attack speed and damage by 5% each, netting roughly a 10% boost to DPS for just 2,800 gold at item level 700.
Sockets, gems and salvage
Any item requiring level 30 or higher can be upgraded with additional sockets up to the maximum capacity of its slot. Adding a socket is guaranteed to succeed, costing item level × 400 gold plus 100 Earth Essence each. Extracting a socketed gem costs 10,000 gold and permanently destroys the gem, so only insert gems you intend to keep.
Salvaging dismantles gear into ore based strictly on rarity and item level. The material yield is predetermined by the item itself rather than rolled upon salvage, meaning reloading to salvage again will yield identical results. Back slot items always break down into 1 Iron Ore.
