The brand-new Shady Bazaar update has officially arrived in Fisch, and honestly, this update has been getting mixed reactions from the community already. Some players think it is a great addition because of the new rods, currencies, and companions, while others feel like there is not enough content for how expensive everything is.

But regardless of how people feel about the update itself, the Shady Bazaar introduces a completely new hidden area, a new currency system called Shady Scripts, new rods, new bait, new companions, and several secret NPCs that are clearly teasing future content.
If you are confused about how to unlock the Shady Bazaar or what everything inside actually does, this guide will walk you through the entire update step-by-step in simple beginner-friendly English.
How to Unlock the Shady Bazaar
The very first thing you need to do is head over to Moosewood Village.
Once you arrive there, go to the small blue hut near the spawn area. This is usually the first building players see when teleporting into Moosewood. Inside the hut, you will find an NPC named Todd lying on a bunk bed.
Talk to Todd and continue through all of his dialogue options. For every prompt, simply choose the first option until the conversation ends.
At the end of the dialogue, Todd gives you a quest called:
Whispers Below the Three
This quest requires you to locate three mysterious figures:
- Lantern Figure
- Diver
- Watchman
Important Spawn Information
This is where many players get confused.
The figures do not require special weather, and you do not need to use Sundial Totems to force them to appear. The only real requirement is:
- It must be nighttime
- Only one figure spawns every few minutes
So this section is basically a waiting game. You will need some patience while rotating between spawn locations.
Lantern Figure Location
The Lantern Figure can appear near Moosewood during nighttime.
Once it spawns:
- Talk to the figure
- Choose the “Huh?” dialogue option
- Receive the Tarnished Lantern
After receiving it, immediately equip the Tarnished Lantern from your inventory.
This step is important because the later quest checks whether you actually have the items equipped.
Diver Location
Next, head over to the Diver spawn location and wait for nighttime again.
Once the Diver appears:
- Talk to them
- Select the same dialogue option
- Receive the Barnacled Hook Bobber
Equip the bobber immediately after receiving it.
Watchman Location
Finally, move to the Watchman spawn point and wait for the final NPC to appear.
After speaking with the Watchman, you receive the:
Crow Feather Charm
Equip the charm as well.
At this point, you should now have all three required items equipped:
- Tarnished Lantern
- Barnacled Hook Bobber
- Crow Feather Charm
Return to Todd
Now head back to Todd in Moosewood.
Speak with him again and finish the dialogue. Your quest objective should now change to:
Coded Words
If your quest updated correctly, you are ready for the final unlock step.
Lighthouse Dialogue Answers
Next, head over to the lighthouse and find the shady figure waiting there.
This part is extremely important because choosing the wrong dialogue options can prevent progress.
Use these exact responses:
First Dialogue Choice
Choose:
“Light keeps honest folk safe.”
Second Dialogue Choice
Choose:
“The sea gives things up eventually.”
Third Dialogue Choice
Choose:
“Trust isn’t given down there. It’s survive.”
Then choose “Yes” afterward.
Once completed, you officially gain access to the hidden underground Shady Bazaar.
Entering the Bazaar Properly
Before running inside, make sure you also talk to the guard NPC nearby.
After speaking with him, he welcomes you into the Shady Bazaar officially, and the area becomes fully accessible.
Now the real update begins.
What Is the Shady Bazaar?
The Shady Bazaar is basically a hidden underground marketplace filled with exclusive vendors, special items, secret NPCs, and a brand-new currency system.
The main currency used here is:
Shady Scripts
Almost everything inside the Bazaar costs Shady Scripts instead of regular cash.
This is also where many players started complaining about the update because the exchange rates are extremely expensive.
Still, there are several interesting features worth checking out.
How Shady Scripts Work
The main Script trader lets players exchange regular cash for Shady Scripts.
The conversion rate is:
- 100,000 Cash = 1 Shady Script
That sounds reasonable at first until you realize how expensive some items are.
For example:
- Shady Rod costs 4,000 Scripts
- That equals 400 million cash
So yes, this update is very expensive for casual players.
Companion Dealer
One of the first vendors you will see is the Companion Dealer.
This NPC mainly sells the new companion called:
Smudge
Smudge costs Shady Scripts and is one of the main attractions of the update because it comes with several passive abilities.
Smudge Companion Passives
Smudge actually has three separate passives.
Passive 1 – Random Trash Collection
Every minute or two, Smudge automatically catches a random trash fish from your current fishing area.
During foggy weather, this passive activates twice as fast.
The trash fish also receives the special:
Sludge Mutation
This mutation gives a 2.5x value multiplier.
Passive 2 – Rare Script Finder
While walking around the Shady Bazaar with Smudge equipped, there is a very small chance that Smudge finds a free Shady Script.
The chance increases slightly during foggy weather, but it is still considered extremely rare.
Passive 3 – Fish Slow Effect
Every fish you hook while using Smudge has its movement speed reduced by 20%.
You can tell this effect is active because hooked fish gain a purple visual effect.
This passive is honestly pretty useful because it makes difficult catches easier to control.
How Smudge Levels Up
Unlike normal companions, Smudge gains XP whenever you earn Shady Scripts naturally.
However, purchased Scripts from cash exchange do NOT count toward XP progression.
So if you want to level Smudge efficiently, you need to earn Scripts through quests and gameplay instead of simply buying them.
Rod Dealer Overview
The Rod Dealer currently sells two rods:
- Moonlit Rod
- Shady Rod
Both are expensive, but the Shady Rod is clearly designed as the high-end item of this update.
Moonlit Rod Stats and Passive
Base Stats
- Lure Speed: 78%
- Luck: 160%
- Control: 0.05
- Resilience: 30%
- Max KG: 250
Moonlit Blessing Passive
After catching 10 fish at nighttime using the rod, you gain:
Moonlit Blessing
This grants:
- +75% Luck
- +25 Progress Speed
- 100% Lunar Mutation Chance
During Moonlit Mirage events, the buff becomes even stronger:
- Double effects
- +25% size bonus
The rod is solid overall, especially for night fishing, though many players seem divided on the visual design.
Shady Rod Stats and Passive
Now this is the rod most people are talking about.
Base Stats
- Lure Speed: 80%
- Luck: 350%
- Control: 0.08
- Resilience: 40%
- Max KG: 600
Passive Effects
The Shady Rod has multiple passives:
Fish Duplication
There is a 5% chance to duplicate a nearby player’s caught fish.
Only the Shady Rod owner receives the duplicate fish.
The duplicated fish also gains the:
Shady Mutation
Darkness Progression Bonus
This rod performs differently depending on lighting.
- In dark areas: +100% progress speed
- In bright areas: -25% progress speed penalty
This makes the rod very unique compared to anything currently in the game.
Shady Mutation Chance
Every catch has a:
- 25% chance for Shady Mutation
Perfect Catch Bonus
Every perfect catch rewards:
- 1 free Shady Script
This is probably the rod’s most important feature because it helps players slowly recover Scripts after buying the rod.
Bait Dealer Items
The Bazaar also includes several new bait types.
Barnacle Cluster
Stats include:
- Preferred Luck: 172
- Universal Luck: 20
- Resilience: 70
- Lure Speed: -10
- Progress Speed: -10%
- 10% Barnacle Mutation chance
Shady Larvae
Stats include:
- Preferred Luck: 350
- Universal Luck: 175
- Resilience: -35
- Lure Speed: 35
- Disturbance: +1
- 10% Shady Mutation chance
Blackwater Leech
Stats include:
- Preferred Luck: 233
- Universal Luck: 35
- Resilience: -5
- Lure Speed: 5
- Disturbance: +3
- 10% Blackwater Mutation chance
Shady Angler Quests
The Shady Angler NPC gives repeatable quests that reward Shady Scripts.
This is the main way free-to-play players can realistically grind Scripts without needing hundreds of millions of cash.
One example quest rewards:
- 80 Scripts for returning a Blight Idol
If you do not have massive amounts of money, this NPC will probably become your best friend.
Admin Relic NPC
There is also an Admin Relic vendor.
If you participated during the original Admin Relic event, this NPC gives you:
- 50 free Shady Scripts
If you missed the event, you can purchase the Admin Relic for:
- 100 Shady Scripts
The relic itself becomes unsellable afterward.
Mysterious Shadow NPC
One of the most interesting parts of the update is the mysterious hidden NPC called:
Mysterious Shadow
Currently, this NPC only says:
- “Come back in the future.”
- “The day is not now.”
Nobody fully knows what this NPC is for yet, but many players believe it may connect to future updates or the Time Machine item from previous quests.
Right now, it is basically a teaser for upcoming content.
Black Market Vendor Explained
The Black Market Vendor also returned.
This vendor works similarly to older limited-time black market events.
Important things to know:
- Items rotate
- Some are only available for one hour
- Rotations may return every 12 hours
- Certain items use normal cash instead of Scripts
This system confused many players at launch because the timing was not explained clearly, so it is worth checking frequently if you are trying to collect limited items.
The Shady Bazaar update honestly feels more like a setup for future content than a massive expansion by itself.
There are definitely some cool additions:
- Hidden underground market
- New currency system
- Smudge companion
- Unique rods
- Secret NPCs
- New mutations and bait
But at the same time, many players feel the prices are far too expensive for the amount of content currently available.
Still, if future updates expand the Bazaar further, this update could become much more important later on. Right now, it mainly serves as a new progression hub with some interesting mechanics and a few expensive endgame rewards.
