If you’re jumping into Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era and thinking about trying the Hive, just know this upfront. This faction is strong, but it’s not forgiving.
Early game can feel rough. You don’t have a reliable ranged unit to clear neutral fights easily, so you’ll rely a lot on positioning, understanding AI behavior, and using your tools smartly. But if you stick with it, Hive scales hard and becomes extremely dangerous later on.
Let’s break it down properly.
Hive Basics: What You’re Dealing With
The biggest issue early is simple. No strong ranged unit for creeping.
That means:
- You rely on melee positioning
- You need to control enemy movement
- You use egg summons to bait attacks
The egg mechanic is actually one of your best early tools. Instead of letting enemies run into your army, you drop eggs to distract them while you isolate and clean up threats.
Later on, everything flips. Hive becomes fast, aggressive, and capable of overwhelming enemies with sheer pressure. With things like haste and good positioning, you can basically deploy right in your opponent’s face and wipe them before they react.
Hero Breakdown
Let’s go through the important ones and how they actually feel in practice.
Neve
Very simple hero.
- Increases basic attack damage as you level
- Adds scaling damage to ranged and long reach units
Sounds nice, but in reality, Hive doesn’t benefit much from this. Your ranged options are limited and fragile. Overall, this one feels weaker compared to others.
Maelstrom
Focuses on Reavers.
- Boosts their growth
- Improves their stats over time
Reavers are one of the strongest units in the faction. With the right setup, they can chain attacks after kills and snowball fights hard.
The downside is you’re putting everything into one unit type. Strong when it works, but risky.
No
Straightforward scaling hero.
- Gains extra attributes
- Gains extra XP
Nothing flashy, just consistent. Battlecraft helps with timing your attacks. Decent, but not game-changing.
Zorn
Worm-focused hero.
- Boosts worm growth
- Starts with Nightshade Magic
Nightshade Magic is actually very strong here, especially with Eclipse to shut down enemy ranged units.
The issue is starting with a very limited army. That makes early fights uncomfortable.
Ken (Duke of Rage)
This one stands out immediately.
- Heroic Strike deals damage and reduces initiative
- Can reset on kill with upgrades
This solves Hive’s early weakness. You suddenly have a reliable way to deal damage without relying on units.
You can:
- Pick off enemies early
- Reset cooldown
- Chain kills
This hero makes early game much smoother compared to others.
Tavi
Summoning-focused hero.
- Improves egg summons
- Scales swarm potential
This gets stronger the longer fights go.
If eggs are ignored, they hatch and flood the battlefield. If enemies deal with them, they waste actions.
More of a late-game powerhouse, but very fun to play.
Low
Locust-focused.
- Boosts locust growth
- Works around double strike mechanics
Locusts hit hard but take damage in return. This makes early fights risky, but the damage output is solid if you build around it.
Gold Tongue
Morale-based hero.
- Increases morale
- Improves chance of extra actions
Morale stacking works extremely well with Hive, especially with units like Reavers. More attacks means more pressure.
Abigor
One of the strongest options.
- Better deployment range
- Increases initiative
Late game, this gets ridiculous. Your army starts faster and closer, letting you overwhelm enemies immediately.
Perfect for aggressive playstyles.
Flu
Mobility-focused.
- Increased movement on map
- Access to strong spell effects
Not the strongest early, but scales well once you start moving faster and engaging more fights.
Zur
Tank-oriented hero.
- Reduces damage taken
- Works well with retaliation mechanics
Interesting synergy with larvae and vengeance effects. More advanced playstyle, but has potential.
Batham
Economy hero.
- Generates more crystals
- Helps with resource management
Hive is extremely resource-hungry, especially for higher-tier units. This hero smooths that out.
Mila
One of the best picks.
- Starts with mass haste
Speed is everything for Hive. Getting your entire army moving faster from the start is incredibly strong.
Orex
Blink-focused.
- Can reposition units instantly
You can pull enemies into your army or push your own units forward instantly. Very flexible and fun to use.
Carth
Primal magic specialist.
- Boosts primal spells
- Prevents enemies from casting primal
Situational but powerful in the right matchup.
Popper
Simple but effective.
- Gives flat speed to your entire army
No setup required. Just faster units all the time. Works perfectly with Hive’s aggressive style.
Units Overview
Hive units are all about synergy and variety.
Parasites
- Long reach attacks
- Strong against higher-tier units
Used early for baiting and scaling damage.
Locusts
- Double strike
- Can consume corpses for buffs
Very aggressive unit. Gains stats mid-fight if used correctly.
Hornets
- Fast flying attackers
Great for diving enemy ranged units.
Scorpions
- Tanky and adaptable
You can modify their role using focus points.
Reavers
One of the best units in the faction.
- Bonus damage vs high-tier enemies
- Can chain attacks after kills
Extremely strong when supported properly.
Worms
- Teleport across battlefield
- Can execute weakened enemies
Useful for finishing off damaged stacks.
Pyroboros (Ranged Unit)
- AoE ranged attacks
- Can still fight in melee
Your only real ranged option, and it comes later.
Hive Queen (Top Tier Unit)
- Gains bonuses based on enemy composition
- Strong AoE damage
- Boosts your hero’s magic damage
Hive Mother variant is especially strong since it spreads bonuses to your entire army.
Law Tree and Key Upgrades
A few important things stand out here.
- Focus Reserves: Lets you start battles with focus, enabling early egg usage
- Mana Devour: Reduces spell costs
- Natural Selection: External dwellings give upgraded units
- Great Conquest: Huge stat boosts when fighting outside your territory
Hive rewards aggressive expansion and constant fighting.
Egg Summon Mechanic
This is core to how the faction plays.
- You summon eggs that hatch into larvae
- If ignored, they create pressure
- If attacked, they waste enemy turns
Best ways to use it:
- Drop eggs at the end of a round so they hatch safely
- Use them as bait to redirect enemy movement
- Detonate larvae for AoE damage
With upgrades, these can become extremely strong in longer fights.
Hive is not beginner-friendly in the usual sense. Early game requires patience and smart play. You will take losses if you don’t understand positioning.
But once it clicks:
- Your army becomes fast
- Your pressure becomes overwhelming
- Your late game becomes scary
If you want an easier start, go with heroes like Ken, Mila, or Abigor. They smooth out the faction’s weaknesses and let you learn the mechanics without getting punished too hard.
Stick with it, and Hive becomes one of the most satisfying factions to play.
