While exploring Subnautica 2, you will eventually notice strange burning plants deep in the eastern parts of the map. The closer you get to them, the more dangerous the environment becomes. Your PDA starts warning you about extreme temperatures, and if you continue swimming forward without preparation, you will quickly start taking damage.

At first, it might seem like these volcanic areas are locked for late-game exploration only, but they are actually accessible much earlier once you unlock the Heat Tolerance alien trait.

This upgrade is incredibly important because it allows you to safely explore high-temperature biomes that normally kill you within seconds. Several important crafting materials and progression areas are hidden inside these dangerous zones, so getting Heat Tolerance eventually becomes necessary for progression.

The process is a little confusing if you do not know where to go, though. Here is the full walkthrough on how to unlock it.

Heat Tolerance protects you from the extreme thermal environments found in volcanic regions and overheated biomes.

Without it:

  • High-temperature areas rapidly damage your character
  • Exploring lava zones becomes nearly impossible
  • Several late-game resources remain inaccessible
  • Some story progression paths become blocked

Once unlocked, you can safely explore these dangerous environments without constantly worrying about overheating.

It is basically one of the key exploration upgrades in the game.

You Need the Sonic Resonator First

Before attempting to unlock Heat Tolerance, you must first obtain the Sonic Resonator.

This tool is required because the cave containing the Gene Donor is blocked by Bloom Biofilm growths that cannot be removed normally.

Without the Sonic Resonator, you will not be able to enter the cave or clear the infected blossoms protecting the area.

So if you have not crafted it yet, make sure to unlock that first before continuing.

Where to Find the Heat Tolerance Gene Donor

The Heat Tolerance trait is unlocked through interaction with a special Gene Donor flower.

If the flower looks familiar, that is because it is the same type of pink alien organism you encountered during the opening sequence of the game.

Heat Tolerance Location

DetailInformation
Direction from Lifepod295° (West/Northwest)
Distance from Lifepod~202m
RequirementSonic Resonator

To begin, return to your Lifepod and face approximately 295 degrees on your compass.

This direction places you between West and Northwest.

Now swim forward for roughly 200 meters.

Once you reach the correct area, look downward into the water carefully. You should eventually notice a cave entrance partially blocked by Bloom Biofilm.

The entrance can sometimes be difficult to spot depending on lighting and visibility, so do not panic if you miss it initially.

A good sign you are in the right place is seeing white blossom-like growths covering parts of the cave opening.

How to Open the Cave

The cave entrance is sealed by Bloom Biofilm anomalies.

Equip the Sonic Resonator and aim directly at the white Biofilm blossoms blocking the path.

Once hit, the anomaly clears away and opens access deeper into the cave.

After entering, you will eventually discover a large closed flower sitting in the middle of the chamber.

This is the Gene Donor, but you cannot interact with it yet because it remains sealed until nearby Biofilm growths are removed.

How to Activate the Gene Donor

This is the part that confuses many players because the game does not explain the mechanic very clearly.

To awaken the Gene Donor, you must follow the flower-like pathways extending deeper into the cave tunnels.

These paths eventually lead toward several Bloom Biofilm cankers growing at the ends of side passages.

There are three Biofilm flowers you need to destroy.

Use the Sonic Resonator on each one.

Once all three are removed, return to the main Gene Donor chamber.

Clearing the Final Biofilm Blossoms

After destroying the three hidden cankers, additional Biofilm blossoms appear surrounding the Gene Donor itself.

At this point, a hostile creature also appears nearby, making the area slightly more dangerous.

You now need to destroy the four visible Biofilm blossoms surrounding the Gene Donor.

There may also be two blossoms attached directly to the creature, but those do not need to be removed.

Focus only on the blossoms around the flower itself.

Once they are destroyed, the Gene Donor finally opens completely.

How to Unlock Heat Tolerance

With the Biofilm removed, approach the pink flower at the center of the Gene Donor and interact with it.

Doing this permanently unlocks the Heat Tolerance trait.

Afterward, you can safely begin exploring overheated volcanic regions that were previously too dangerous to survive in.

This includes areas with:

  • Burning underwater plants
  • Lava biome pathways
  • High-temperature resource zones
  • Advanced exploration regions

Is Heat Tolerance Worth Getting Early?

Absolutely.

Even though you may not immediately need volcanic resources, unlocking Heat Tolerance early makes future exploration much smoother.

Instead of constantly avoiding thermal zones, you can freely explore dangerous biomes whenever needed.

It also removes one of the biggest exploration barriers in the current Early Access version of the game.

Honestly, it feels very similar to finally unlocking depth upgrades in the older Subnautica games. Once you have it, huge sections of the map suddenly become accessible.

The Heat Tolerance trait is one of the most important exploration upgrades currently available in Subnautica 2. While the unlocking process is a little more puzzle-focused than some players expect, it is thankfully not too difficult once you know where to go.

As soon as you unlock it, the dangerous volcanic regions across the map become far easier to explore, opening access to new resources, crafting paths, and progression areas that were previously blocked by extreme heat.
