The Sakura Wars community has long shown exceptional dedication, from translating games to recreating stage plays and manga for international audiences. Recently, their passion unearthed a piece of lost franchise history that many believed gone forever.
Back in the early 2000s, Sega aimed to expand Sakura Wars into an MMORPG, distinct from the existing Sakura Wars Online minigame collection. This ambitious title ultimately never launched and remained a little-known part of the series’ past.
The lost MMO was first announced at ChinaJoy in July 2006 but was canceled less than a year later as Sega pulled out from developing games for the Chinese online market. Information on the project was sparse, limited to a single interview with creator Ohji Hiroi and a leaked screenshot in 2019.
Unexpectedly, a fan named Kanna’s Nr.1 Fan tracked down and scanned 30 pages of concept art, revealing character designs for those who would have populated the MMO world. This discovery offers invaluable insight into what the game might have looked like.
While browsing Yahoo Auctions, Kanna’s Nr.1 Fan spotted these design sheets among a seller’s anime material. She secured the collection for 16,500 Yen, preventing these rare artifacts from disappearing into obscurity once again.
The sheets include characters beyond those glimpsed in the 2019 screenshot leak, showcasing a varied cast reminiscent of familiar archetypes from the main Sakura Wars titles. Despite unknown roles, fans can infer their gameplay functions based on visual cues.

Not all the lost MMO’s art has been recovered, as gaps in numbering between CHA_02 and CHA_05 suggest some characters remain missing—likely key members of the game’s Main Division who would have played significant roles.
Among the newly revealed characters are Yang Xiaolong and Huang Yui, names familiar to fans from 2019’s Shin Sakura Wars. Their designs appear to have been reworked for that game’s Shanghai Division, showing direct continuity from this lost project.

Several design sheets credit AIC, the animation studio behind the Sakura Wars: New York, New York OVA, confirming where this artwork was produced and highlighting the professional quality behind the MMO’s concept visuals.
While it’s uncertain how far the MMO progressed in development, the quantity of character art and leaked 3D screenshots indicate that production had advanced beyond preliminary stages before cancellation halted all efforts.
Kanna’s Nr.1 Fan has uploaded scans of all 30 character designs to The Internet Archive, making this lost piece of Sakura Wars history widely accessible to the passionate fanbase worldwide.
