The Collector Leviathan is one of the most dangerous creatures currently found in Subnautica 2. Unlike many predators that simply patrol a specific area, the Collector actively hunts players once they enter its detection range, making exploration in affected regions much more stressful.

Fortunately, there are several reliable ways to avoid becoming its next victim. This guide covers how the Collector Leviathan works and the best strategies for surviving encounters.

How the Collector Leviathan Works

The Collector Leviathan appears to detect players from roughly 200 to 300 meters away. Once it locks onto a target, it quickly closes the distance and can easily outrun most players.

Depending on the situation, the creature behaves differently when it reaches you:

  • Players outside a vehicle are instantly killed if grabbed.
  • Players inside a Tadpole may be grabbed and thrown, causing minor damage.
  • The Leviathan can also strike the Tadpole with a tentacle attack that deals significant damage.

Because of its speed and aggression, avoiding detection is usually a better option than trying to outrun it.

Best Ways to Avoid the Collector Leviathan

Use Flares as a Distraction

One of the easiest methods is carrying a few flares whenever you travel through dangerous areas.

When a flare is thrown, the Collector Leviathan becomes distracted and focuses on the flare instead of the player. This gives you a valuable opportunity to escape and continue your journey safely.

Since flares are relatively easy to obtain, keeping a few in your inventory is highly recommended.

Hide Beneath Rock Formations

Natural terrain can be surprisingly effective against the Collector Leviathan.

Large rock structures found throughout the Sparse Plains provide excellent cover. Moving underneath these formations can help break line of sight and remove you from the creature’s detection range.

While some openings may look large enough for the Leviathan to enter, it generally cannot fit through the narrow spaces beneath these structures.

Stay Close to the Seafloor

Another effective strategy is remaining near the bottom of the biome whenever possible.

Players equipped with the Tadpole Depth Module MK 1 can comfortably travel along the seafloor while reducing their chances of being spotted.

Those without the upgrade can still use this method, although the limited depth range makes it riskier. Staying lower in the water column appears to reduce the likelihood of attracting the Leviathan’s attention.

Travel Along the Surface

Some players prefer the opposite approach by staying as close to the ocean’s surface as possible.

Repeatedly moving in and out of the water can make it more difficult for the Collector Leviathan to maintain an effective pursuit. While this won’t completely prevent attacks, it often provides additional time to escape.

This strategy works particularly well when returning to safer regions after completing exploration objectives.

Tips for Safe Exploration

Before entering areas known to contain the Collector Leviathan, consider the following preparations:

  • Carry multiple flares.
  • Repair your Tadpole before long trips.
  • Upgrade your depth modules whenever possible.
  • Learn the locations of nearby rock formations.
  • Avoid unnecessary detours once the Leviathan notices you.

Preparation often makes the difference between a successful expedition and losing valuable resources.

The Collector Leviathan is designed to be intimidating, but it becomes much easier to manage once you understand its behavior. Flares remain the safest countermeasure, while terrain, seafloor navigation, and surface travel can all help you avoid dangerous encounters.

Until more defensive tools become available, avoiding the Leviathan is generally the smartest strategy. Stay alert, keep escape routes in mind, and always carry a few flares before venturing into its territory.
