One of the first problems players encounter in TBH: Task Bar Hero is inventory management. Enemies constantly drop equipment, and before long your inventory becomes packed with weapons, armor, and accessories that you no longer need.

Unlike many RPGs, there isn’t a traditional merchant where you can simply sell unwanted gear. Instead, item selling is handled through a special system known as the Cube. Understanding how the Cube works is important because it not only helps clear inventory space but also provides one of the most reliable sources of gold during the early game.
If you’re trying to save up for Rune upgrades, additional Hero Slots, or other important purchases, learning when and how to use Alchemy can significantly speed up your progression.
Unlocking the Cube
Before you can sell anything, you need access to the Cube.
The Cube unlocks automatically when your first Hero reaches Level 4. Fortunately, this happens very quickly. Most players will unlock it within the first fifteen minutes of gameplay simply by progressing normally.
Once your Hero reaches Level 4, a Cube icon will appear at the bottom of the Hero menu.
This system serves multiple purposes throughout the game, including item conversion, crafting progression, and equipment upgrading. Early on, however, its most valuable function is Alchemy.
Understanding the Cube Menu
When you first open the Cube, you’ll notice that it defaults to a feature called Synthesis.
Many new players assume this is where items are sold, but Synthesis and Alchemy are completely different systems.
Synthesis
Synthesis combines multiple items into a stronger item.
Specifically, you can combine nine items of the same rarity to create one random item from the next rarity tier.
While useful later in the game, Synthesis is usually not the best option during the early stages when gold is scarce.
Alchemy
Alchemy is the Cube function used for selling equipment.
Instead of combining items, Alchemy converts unwanted gear directly into gold.
If your goal is earning money, this is the option you’ll want to use most frequently.
Selling Items Through Alchemy
Once the Cube is unlocked, selling items becomes straightforward.
Open the Hero menu and click the Cube icon located at the bottom of the screen.
Near the top of the Cube window you’ll see a dropdown menu. By default, it will be set to Synthesis.
Click the dropdown and change it to Alchemy.
With Alchemy selected, begin adding unwanted items to the Cube.
There are two ways to do this.
The first method is simply right-clicking items inside your inventory. Each selected item will automatically move into an available Cube slot.
The second method is dragging items directly into the Cube interface.
After selecting everything you want to sell, press the confirmation button located next to Auto Fill.
The chosen items will be converted into gold instantly.
Using Auto Fill
For players with full inventories, Auto Fill can save a lot of time.
Selecting Auto Fill automatically transfers items from your inventory into available Cube slots.
However, there is one important drawback.
The feature does not filter valuable equipment from worthless equipment.
Because of this, always review the items that Auto Fill selects before confirming the conversion. Accidentally selling a useful piece of gear is surprisingly easy if you’re not paying attention.
Protecting Important Equipment
Fortunately, the game includes a protection system.
Holding Alt and Left Clicking an item locks it.
Locked items cannot be accidentally selected by many Cube functions, making them much safer to keep in your inventory.
This is especially useful for rare equipment, favorite upgrades, or gear you’re currently saving for another hero.
Many experienced players make it a habit to lock valuable items immediately after obtaining them.
Checking Item Values Before Selling
Not every item is worth the same amount of gold.
Before placing an item into the Cube, hover over it and examine its information panel.
Among the displayed statistics you’ll find the item’s gold value.
Checking values becomes particularly useful when deciding whether to sell equipment or save it for future Synthesis upgrades.
Sometimes a valuable item may be worth more as crafting material than as immediate gold.
Step-by-Step Selling Process
If you simply want a quick checklist, follow these steps:
- Reach Level 4 with your first Hero.
- Open the Hero menu.
- Click the Cube icon.
- Change the Cube mode from Synthesis to Alchemy.
- Add unwanted items using right-click or drag-and-drop.
- Review the selected items carefully.
- Press the confirmation button.
- Collect your gold.
After finishing, close the Cube menu to avoid accidentally adding equipment when trying to equip items later.
Understanding Cube Level Progression
While using Alchemy, you may notice a progress bar filling near the top of the Cube menu.
This is your Cube Level.
Every action performed inside the Cube contributes toward leveling it.
Selling items through Alchemy increases Cube Level.
Using Synthesis also increases Cube Level.
As the Cube levels up, new features become available.
One of the earliest milestones occurs at Cube Level 5, where crafting options begin unlocking.
These new functions appear inside the same dropdown menu used to switch between Synthesis and Alchemy.
Because of this, regularly using the Cube is beneficial even if you’re primarily interested in earning gold.
Selling Items Versus Using Synthesis
Many players wonder whether they should sell gear or combine it.
The answer depends largely on where you are in progression.
Early Game Priorities
During the early game, selling items is usually the superior choice.
Gold is extremely important because it funds Rune upgrades.
Rune upgrades provide major account-wide improvements, including additional Hero Slots.
Unlocking more heroes has a much greater impact on progression than obtaining a slightly stronger synthesized item.
Because of this, most players should prioritize Alchemy until their economy becomes stable.
Mid-Game and Beyond
Once you’ve unlocked multiple Hero Slots and established a strong party, Synthesis becomes much more attractive.
At this stage, improving equipment quality often provides more value than accumulating extra gold.
You’ll likely find yourself using both systems depending on your current goals.
Alchemy Versus the Steam Market
Another common source of confusion is the difference between Alchemy and the Steam Market.
Alchemy converts equipment into in-game gold.
The Steam Market allows players to trade items through Steam using the Trade Ship interface.
These are completely separate systems.
If you’re trying to buy Rune upgrades, heroes, or other in-game progression features, use Alchemy.
If you’re attempting to list items on Steam, use the Trade Ship instead.
Common Reasons You Can’t Sell Items
If selling isn’t working, there are usually only a few possible causes.
The Cube Isn’t Unlocked
Make sure your first Hero has reached Level 4.
Without Level 4, the Cube system remains unavailable.
The Wrong Cube Mode Is Selected
The most common mistake is leaving the Cube on Synthesis.
Always verify that Alchemy is selected before attempting to sell equipment.
The Cube Menu Isn’t Open
Items can only be added for sale while the Cube interface is active.
If the menu is closed, right-clicking items won’t send them to Alchemy.
You’re Trying to Use the Steam Market
Remember that Alchemy only generates in-game gold.
Selling items through Steam requires the Trade Ship interface instead.
Best Early-Game Gold Strategy
For most new players, the best approach is simple.
Sell the majority of unwanted equipment through Alchemy.
Invest that gold into Rune upgrades.
Prioritize unlocking additional Hero Slots as quickly as possible.
Once you have a strong party established and your economy is producing gold comfortably, begin experimenting with Synthesis and higher-rarity gear upgrades.
Following this approach provides the smoothest progression path and helps you reach the powerful multi-hero party setups much faster than focusing on item synthesis too early.
